The hospital said I needed someone to accompany me for the procedure.

I didn’t want to tell anyone I knew, so I hired someone online for the day.

The next day, the person agreed to meet me downstairs at the scheduled time.

When I walked out of the building, I froze.

Tristan was leaning against a car door, holding up a little sign that said “Medical Escort,” grinning at me.

“Well, good morning, boss.”

He walked over casually as he spoke, took my bag without asking, and grabbed my wrist to steer me toward the car.

I pulled my hand back and pressed my throbbing temple.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

He really was insane.

We’d never gotten along since high school. Always rubbed each other the wrong way.

He knew I liked Garrett and never missed a chance to mock me for it—said I had lousy taste and would get dumped sooner or later.

He glanced at his watch. “If we don’t leave now, you’ll be late.”

I stepped back. I didn’t want anyone seeing me like this.

“I’ll book someone else. You can go.”

He seemed to see right through me. Deliberately, he raised an eyebrow.

“If you don’t go, I’ll call Garrett right now.”

My eyes went wide. A wave of hurt surged up inside me.

Back in school, he always found ways to get under my skin.

At the reunion, he had also exposed everything just to embarrass me.

Tears fell for the first time in front of him.

“So you just enjoy bullying me, huh?”

He froze. His hand lifted as if he wanted to wipe my tears away, then stopped halfway.

He stammered, “No… I… you’re really not going to tell him?”

I didn’t bother answering. I grabbed my bag and turned to leave.

But he chased after me and grabbed my wrist again.

He stood too close. Without thinking, I leaned back to avoid him.

He let out a sharp breath, then his tone turned serious.

“You should stop seeing Garrett. He doesn’t deserve you.”

I let out a cold laugh. “You don’t say.”

His mouth twitched, like he was holding something back.

Then, slowly, he let go.

I didn’t have time to waste. I called a car and rushed to the hospital.

The procedure required a family member’s signature.

I stood alone there, my mind buzzing, completely blank. I had no idea who to call.

While I was still hesitating, a hand suddenly reached over my shoulder, took the form, and signed it swiftly.

Tristan had somehow followed me inside.

He didn’t even look at me as he handed the form back to the nurse.

Shame, embarrassment, confusion—all of it twisted together in my chest until I couldn’t form a single word.

I barely remember how I got onto the operating table.

The anesthesia started to kick in.

Everything around me slowly faded to black.
