The Day He Donated My Heart, I Reset the World Chapter 05 The Tell

Sence on the line. Then Cassian came back–careful, testing the waters.

“Baby–what’s going on? You’re freezing me out. Did I mess up? Tell me. I can’t fix it if I don’t know.”

And then his voice–inside my head. Clear as if he’d spoken out loud.

“The fuck’s her problem? I haven’t even done anything. Did she catch on? No. Impossible. We’re too close- she’s supposed to hand over her heart for Celeste. I can’t afford a single slip right now.”

I listened. My mouth twitched. Not a smile.

So that was the play. All those years of him groveling, clinging, playing the lovesick fool–didn’t have shi to do with me being the main character. He was farming me. My heart—already marked for harvest. Celeste’s name on the tag.

They couldn’t touch me.

But I wasn’t going to stay on their board–I was going to flip it.

The silence got under his skin. He tried again–voice dripping honey, all performed warmth.

“Baby, is this because I’ve been spending so much time with Celeste? Making you upset? Come on. Me and Celeste–it’s nothing like that. She nearly died saving me. I owe her. What kind of person would I be if I just walked away?”

I pressed my fingers to my temple–the ache was spreading–and let the silence stretch before I answered. “That’s all?”

The line went dead quiet. Three seconds. I counted them.

When Cassian’s voice came back, it was careful. Too careful. “Baby… Do you remember how you came back? The system–do you remember any of that?”

I played it blank. Eyes wide, voice light–the perfect confused wife.

“Cassian, are you okay? System? What is that even supposed to mean? Look, got stuff to do. I really have to go,”

Hung up. Didn’t wait.

I carried the scars from that life with me.

There was no way I was going back to that–not now, not ever.

That night I crashed at Mia’s.

In the days that followed, Cassian came looking for me like a man possessed. This was the fifth time he’d shown up at her door.

Mia shut him down every single time. No dice.

Now she sat across from me, frowning.

relia, he’s been here five times. He looks like he hasn’t slept in days. I’m not saying take him back–but daon. If that were me? I’d have caved.”

I put my phone down. Looked at her.

“What if I told you I’ve already lived through this once? That I died and came back from future.”

Mia’s eyes went wide. Then she lit up like a kid on Christmas morning.

“Shut up–that’s insane. You actually came back? Like, the real you? Wait–what about me? What happens to me in the future?”

She was vibrating with excitement. My throat closed up.

I knew what was waiting for her.

Last life, her family broke her down slow. Not with fists–with words. You’re running out of time. Nobody

gonna want you.

She caved. Married some guy she barely knew. A week later, signed the papers.

Then he started hitting her. And didn’t stop.

I breathed in. Told her. The whole thing. Start to finish.

She went rigid. A shudder ran through her. Her face crumpled.

“No. No fucking way. I’d never. Even if they pushed me that hard, I wouldn’t just grab some random dude and marry him.”

Right then–her phone buzzed.

She checked the screen. Her face shifted. Her mother’s voice came through the speaker–low, tired, disappointed-

“Sweetheart, your father’s not getting any younger. He’d really like to walk you down the aisle before… well. You know how his heart is.”

Mia opened her mouth–the reflex already forming. “Maybe I’ll just grab some-”

The words died right there.

She went still. Not the kind of still where you’re thinking. The kind where your body figures it out before your brain does.

She stared at me. The color drained out of her face.

“Babe.” She ended the line, swallowing hard. Her voice was shaking now. “You just–you called every single thing. How do you–how-”
