The Day Another Woman Became the Bride Chapter 10

The Day Another Woman Became the Bride Chapter 10

The bystander had posted it only to mock its absurdity.

The video was from the same city, and the wedding dress matched. Viewers quickly confirmed it was Paige.

She wasn’t just a pick-me. She was a real homewrecker trying to destroy someone else’s marriage.

People became even angrier. Her company was flooded with complaint emails and posts tagging its official account.

Viewers also identified Mason and his friends from the publicly posted wedding videos.

Their social media accounts were flooded with criticism.

Honestly, even I was surprised by how far it went.

I’d thought Paige was just being petty and trying to provoke me.

I never imagined she’d planned from the start to stop me from actually getting married.

I received a message from Paige.

“I’m sorry, Claire. Can you please say something online for me?”

“I can’t take it anymore. The company investigated and fired me. People discuss me to my face

whenever I go out.”

I typed one word.

“No.”

Then I blocked her.

I didn’t follow what happened after that.

I was busy relocating my bakery business to Providence.

The bakery’s commercial lease had a year left. I had spent all my post-graduation savings on it.

Fortunately, it was near Cambridge’s university district, and my baking had earned a strong local

reputation. I didn’t lose much when assigning the lease and selling the equipment.

My parents had already found a shop for me in Providence. We just needed to discuss the

renovation.

Everything went smoothly. In less than a day, almost everything was settled.

As I climbed into the private car back to Providence, I felt grateful.

Good thing I’dn’t signed the marriage papers or moved in with Mason. Property issues would have

been a nightmare.

The new bakery held its grand-opening weekend.

The high quality and fair prices packed the shop on opening day.

Providence wasn’t as bustling as Boston, but the profits were almost the same.

I was considering what new items to add to next month’s menu when an unknown number called.

I’d been getting a lot of cake orders lately, so I answered without thinking.

The familiar voice made me pause,

“Hey, Claire. It’s me.”

It took me a second to realize it was Mason.

We hadn’t seen each other in months. The past already felt like a long time ago.

He was calling to say goodbye.

The online scandal had become ugly. His boss was furious with him, and even the Whitfields

avoided appearing in public.

A few days earlier, a three-year overseas assignment had become available at the company’s Cape

Town branch. He had accepted it.

“I’m not calling for anything else. Just wanted to say goodbye.”

“And take care of yourself. I hope you’re happy.”

He didn’t beg or push.

I wasn’t going to feel anything for someone who no longer mattered.

I dismissed it at once, picked up the order sheet, and got on with my day.

“Pre-orders: ten tiramisus, twenty strawberry mousses, and…”

I stood, rubbed my wrists, and started mixing the batter.

Sunlight streamed through the window. The warm, comforting scent of cream filled the kitchen.

Everything from before was behind me now.

From here on, I just wanted to live my own life.
