The Daughter They Threw Away Came Back Wearing His Ring Chapter 03

She had not hidden.

She was lying in the bathtub, with a shallow, mostly healed cut across her wrist.

Beside her was a note.

It read, “Addison said I am stupid and weak. She said I do not deserve to be Mom and Dad’s daughter. She said I am a parasite ruining this family and should just die.”

My father scooped Gina into his arms and bolted out.

His legs were so weak that he nearly fell several times.

My mother’s face lost all color.

She pressed hard on Gina’s wrist and screamed for someone to call a cab to the hospital.

They were in such a panic that when they rushed past me, they knocked me down the stairs and never even noticed.

The pain was so sharp I could barely stand.

But terror still pushed me to limp all the way to the hospital.

The moment my mother saw me, she stormed over and slapped me again and again.

The blows came so fast I could barely breathe.

“If Gina had never gotten sick, you would never have had the right to be born!”

“How dare you say that to my daughter?”

Her shrieks stabbed into my ringing ears like needles.

My father grabbed the back of my neck and hauled me into an exam room.

A cold needle slid into my arm.

His expression was dark enough to terrify anyone.

“We had you to save my girl. We fed you. We clothed you. And this is how you repay us?”

My blood left my body so fast my head spun.

I opened my mouth.

In the end, I still could not force out the words.

“I did not hurt Gina.”

“I am your daughter too.”

Once the draw was over, they left again without a backward glance.

The shock sent my body into a fever.

That old desert-dry thirst rose again and swallowed me whole.

A nurse on duty finally noticed me.

One look, and she shouted in alarm.

“Whose child is this? She’s burning up. Where are her parents?”

I tried to point toward the next ward.

But when the nurse helped me up, I collapsed straight onto the floor.

My parents finally came over when they heard the noise.

The nurse tore into them at once.

“What kind of parents are you? This child has a high fever and a broken leg, and you did nothing?”

Only then did they notice my right shin, twisted at an ugly angle beneath my knee, and the blood soaking my pant leg.

Something like pain flickered across my mother’s face.

She took my overheated body from the nurse’s arms.

It was the first time I had ever leaned against my mother’s chest.

I breathed in the faint perfume on her coat like it was oxygen.

Then Gina’s wail filled the ward.

“Mom, Dad, just leave me alone.”

“Whenever you pay attention to me, Addison hurts herself on purpose. She is healthy. I am the sick burden. Just let me rot in the corner.”

At that, my father immediately shoved me to the ground.

He looked at me with grief and fury.

“Addison, how can you be so manipulative?”

“Gina is so kind. Why couldn’t it have been you?”

The last shred of guilt in my mother’s eyes vanished.

All that remained was disappointment and disgust.

“When I gave birth to you, I almost died on that table.”

“The tests said you were a perfect match. Then the transplant failed, and Gina still had to rely on you.”

“Now you want to kill my daughter and take her place?”

Her voice went cold.

“Addison, we cannot afford bone marrow this poisonous. Get out.”

My blood seemed to flood backward.

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

Then I dropped to my knees with a thud and grabbed my mother’s hand.

I slapped my own face with it.

“Mom, please don’t throw me away.”

“I was wrong. I should never have competed with Gina for your love.”

“I’m the one who deserves to die. I’m the reason she is still sick. I’m the sinner.”

“Please. I’m begging you. Don’t send me away.”

I had no idea how long I knelt there.

I only knew that when I woke up after fainting, my broken leg had gone too long without a proper cast.

The bone healed crooked.

The limp became permanent.
