“Elena, have you lost your mind?”

“Who gave you the right to sell that house?”

“Where are we supposed to live now?”

“And you sold it to… to those thugs? They showed up at the house! They forced their way in. Your mother could’ve gotten hurt!”

I let him rant.

“It was my property. I can do what I want with it.”

“Besides, didn’t you tell me everything I gave you was just showing off? That you didn’t want any of it?”

“So I took it back. You and Ms. Smith should be relieved.”

Smith was her maiden name. Using it was my way of officially stripping her of the ‘Mother’ title.

He sputtered.

“She was angry. She didn’t mean any of that! Do you have to take everything so literally?”

“Fix this. Get the house back.”

“Do you realize Chloe is about to leave Julian because of you?”

“If you keep this up, your mother will never forgive you. Ever.”

“I’m counting on it.”

I felt nothing. I hung up.

Then I blocked all their numbers.

They called it anger. They called it heat of the moment. But they’d meant every word. They just never expected consequences.

I wasn’t angry.

Every move I made was deliberate.

After that, they disappeared from my life.

I wrapped up my handover at work and settled into Oakhaven.

The money from the houses was enough to buy a new place.

Without their dead weight dragging me down, my savings started to grow for the first time.

For the first time, the future felt like something I could actually build.

Months passed.

The HR manager mentioned that my parents and Julian had shown up at the main office a couple more times, making demands.

They wanted the company to hand my job over to Julian.

The HR manager stuck to the story and told them I’d resigned.

They finally stopped.

I saw them again later that year. I had to fly back to headquarters for meetings.

On my last night there, I walked out of the office and found my parents waiting on the sidewalk.
