Whether out of belated guilt, complete disappointment in Chloe, or because he truly saw Claire as his only heir, 

Nathaniel changed his will. 

He left most of his core assets and equity holdings to Claire. 

Somehow, the news leaked. 

The news detonated between the already battered Whitmore 

and Lancaster families. 

Chloe completely lost her mind. No longer able to maintain the 

dignity of a society wife, she stormed straight into my studio. 

Her eyes were bloodshot, her makeup smeared, and not a trace 

remained of the effortless elegance she once had. 

She jabbed a finger at me and screamed. 

“Evelyn Hart, you just won’t stay buried, will you? I knew you 

never really let go!” 

“Twenty years ago, you couldn’t keep him with that daughter of yours, so twenty years later, you taught that girl to steal his 

fortune?” 

“What a brilliant little scheme. How vicious.” 

I looked calmly at her deranged face and felt only pity. 

“Chloe Lancaster, neither Claire nor I tried to take anything. This was Nathaniel’s own decision. Whatever problems exist between the two of you, don’t bring them into my life again.” 

“My life?” 

She burst into a shrill laugh filled with venom. 

“You ruined everything for me. If I can’t have it, no one else 

will either.” 

I never expected her madness to go that far. 

A few days later, on Claire’s way home from work, she was targeted in what looked like a carefully planned accident. 

A van swerved straight toward her. 

At the last possible second, someone rushed out from the side 

and shoved Claire out of the way. 

It was Nathaniel. 

He had secretly had people protecting her all along. 

Or perhaps he had already anticipated Chloe’s insanity. 

He took the hit from the speeding van himself. 

Still trembling from the shock, Claire saw only Nathaniel lying 

in a pool of blood. In his final moments, his eyes stayed fixed 

on her. 

He seemed to want to say something. 

But in the end, only blood spilled from his mouth before he 

slowly closed his eyes. 

He traded his life for Claire’s. 

The police quickly opened an investigation and traced the 

hired attack back to Chloe. 

With the evidence ironclad, she was soon arrested and taken 

into custody to face the full force of the law. 

The resentment that had dragged on for more than twenty years came to a sudden, bloody end. 

Nathaniel’s lawyer brought over the official will. 

Faced with a fortune large enough to drive anyone mad, Claire 

was extraordinarily calm. 

She did not cry. 

She showed no sign of being moved. 

She only looked at the document and said coldly, “He saved me. I’m grateful for that. But it doesn’t erase all the harm he 

caused us.” 

“He was the beginning of all of it. Just because he gave his life for mine at the end, am I supposed to forget everything my 

mother suffered? Am I supposed to forget the father I never had growing up, or how coldly he watched us leave back 

then?” 

She signed the document with firm resolve. 

Then she made a decision that shocked everyone. 

She donated every bit of the inheritance Nathaniel had left her and used it to establish a foundation supporting single 

mothers and child welfare. 

“There’s too much ugliness attached to that money, and too many painful memories.” 

Claire looked at me, her eyes clear and steady. 

“We live well on the money we earn ourselves. Let this go to 

people who truly need it. In a way, it can be closure for him, and for that ugly part of the past.” 

I held Claire tightly, my heart filled with fear, grief, and overwhelming pride. 

Nathaniel had paid for his belated remorse with his life, and 

Chloe had finally paid the price for half a lifetime of obsession and cruelty. 

As for Claire and me, we would carry the love and strength we 

had given each other and keep walking toward a future that 

truly belonged to us. 

The storm had passed, and for the first time in years, the sky 

ahead was clear.
