The Comments Begged Me to Believe He Loved Me, His Actions Had Already Convinced Me Otherwise Chapter 03

I typed the message. Deleted it. Typed it again. Deleted it again. By the time my fingers started shaking over the send button, my eyes ached from holding everything in.

Silas called right before I hit send. “Elena. It’s pouring. Come get me.”

[How is that just about rain?? That’s him asking for a ride — it’s his version of reaching out. PLEASE tell me our girl catches on this time.]

[Oh my god, do you realize how HUGE this is for someone who constantly pushes people away? He’s literally trying. I’m gonna cry.]

The comments always made it sound like I should be grateful whenever he needed me. And before, I would’ve gone. Every time — no matter how late, how tired, how far.

Not tonight.

“It’s barely coming down. I’m tired, Silas. I don’t feel like picking you up. Just take a cab home.”

A little while later, the front door opened.

“What the hell are you standing there for?” Silas had one arm around Chloe’s shoulders, gently toweling the rain from her hair. He didn’t look up. “Go get the hair dryer. Do I have to spell out every little thing for you?”

Chloe tugged at his sleeve and gave me an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry, Elena — you know how he is. He doesn’t mean it like that. Really, don’t go to any trouble.”

“It’s just — we were in the studio so late, and my place is too far to get back in time for tomorrow’s competition. So I figured I’d crash here for the night.” She held out a bag. “Silas mentioned you hadn’t eaten, so I grabbed you some sandwiches on the way. Hope that’s okay.”

I forced a smile and pushed the bag back. “Thanks. I’m not hungry.”

The bag slipped and hit the floor. The sandwiches spilled out and split apart on impact.

“Are you done?” Silas’s expression turned cold. He grabbed my wrist, his grip painfully tight. “Chloe went out of her way for you. What the hell is your problem?”

Chloe’s eyes welled up. She reached for his arm, her voice small. “Silas, stop — it was my fault, I was careless…”

But the quiver in her voice was pitched just right — trembling in all the right places.

Silas snapped. He shoved my hand away in disgust. I lost my footing and hit the floor hard. I coughed once, then laughed — a thin, brittle sound.

“Silas, we’ve been together seven years. You still don’t know what I’m allergic to?”

He went still. Then his gaze hardened — not with guilt, but with something meaner. He kicked the ruined mess across the floor until it hit my legs.

“You’re unbelievable, Elena. Acting like some kind of princess when you’ve got nothing to act precious about. You’re starving — just eat. You’re looking for a fight and you know it.”

The sandwich hit my knees and it didn’t hurt. That wasn’t why I wanted to cry.

[The ML is literally DYING inside. He was worried she didn’t like the mac and cheese, so he had Chloe grab her real food on the way — and she STILL won’t eat?? Ungrateful much??]

[This FL is actually insufferable. Throws a fit over everything. How is this wife material? I feel bad for him honestly.]

[He’s bad with words. He’s ALWAYS been bad with words. Can she stop punishing him for it??]

The comments kept coming, line after line, blinding.

I didn’t answer any of them. I grabbed the edge of the sofa and pulled myself up without a word. My hands moved fast, shoving clothes into a bag.

Silas’s fists clenched. He stepped toward me — but a voice stopped him.

“Silas, your paintbrush — why is it broken?” Chloe’s eyes went wide. “I thought the portrait would be ready in time… It was supposed to be my birthday gift…”
