The Childless Sky Chapter 05

The Childless Sky Chapter 05

However, to his surprise, Hannah jolted up from the bed as if she had been shocked.

Jack was in the dark about the full terms of the agreement, unaware that one of the grievances was Hannah’s abortion, done to clear the way for Jack’s future child.

“Why? Is it wrong to want a child for Jack? Jack’s dying, with just six months left. In the end, won’t I still be with you? If it bothered you, why didn’t you say something sooner?”

Without realizing it, Hannah’s feelings took a sharp turn.

Jack’s hand, once a source of warmth and affection, then filled her with an unsettling anxiety.

“I need to use the restroom.”

With that, she did not head for the bathroom in the master bedroom but bolted to the guest bathroom in the living room, making sure to lock the door.

Taking deep breaths, she tried to reassure herself with hopeful thoughts and typed out a text.

[Marvin, did you send that text to the wrong person?]

Her grip on the phone was desperate, mirroring the times I used to message her, as she silently urged a swift response.

One minute, two minutes, three minutes…

The anticipated notification never came.

During the wait, Hannah realized she had at some point disabled the alerts for my messages.

She scrambled to fix it, but no luck, still no answer.

Reflecting on the past, she acknowledged that while I lacked Jack’s wit, I was utterly devoted to her.

The thought of such a devoted man attending to another woman sparked an unexpected jealousy in her.

Hannah hit the voice call button, her mind made up to apologize the moment the call was answered.

She never imagined I had already blocked her, denying even a chance for her to apologize.

Her eyes brimmed with tears, threatening to spill over any second.

She quickly left the chat, scrolling endlessly through her contacts, yet my number was nowhere to be

found.

In a panic, she remembered the relentless calls from the night before.

She frantically reviewed the call history, the missed call notifications glaring back at her, and she finally grasped what I often went through.

She hit the callback button without a second thought!

Meanwhile, I was behind the wheel, feeling my phone buzz in my pocket. Without hesitation, I cut the call.

Then, with no job, no partner, my only concern was my grandfather in the hospital. I needed to get back there fast.

Hannah, undeterred, tried returning each missed call, but I continued to hang up without a second thought.

Jack, who had been waiting in the bedroom, started to worry when Hannah did not return.

He dashed out, noticed the light from the guest bathroom, and let out a sigh of relief.

Approaching the door, he knocked. “Hannah, what’s the matter? Are you feeling okay?”

To his surprise, the usually prompt Hannah did not respond.

No matter how much he knocked, there was silence.

Out of sheer urgency, he pushed the door open.

Seeing Hannah on the floor, whispering to herself while clutching her phone, Jack rushed to her side, asking again. “Hannah, what’s going on? Are you sick?”

At his question, the tears she had been holding back flooded out.

“Jack, Marvin just sent me divorce papers, and now he won’t answer my calls, no matter how many times I try. What should I do?”

Jack could not help but feel a twinge of happiness at the news, but Hannah’s distress signaled that all

was not well.

He had not noticed the flaw in his own words. Somehow, the significance we held in Hannah’s heart had silently shifted.
