The CEO Confessed In Delivery Room While I Bled Out Chapter 08

Caleb came home from work. No smell of food floated from the kitchen anymore. Just whiskey

and cigarette smoke.

Vanessa’s voice cut through the air before he even made it inside. “Dad, how many times do I have

to tell you? Don’t smoke in the living room.”

“Caleb will be home any minute. And I’m pregnant. can’t stand the smell.”

He stood in the doorway.

The coffee table was a mess. Empty bottles. Cigarette butts everywhere.

Vanessa was holding her belly with this annoyed look on her face. Her parents sat on the couch

like they owned the place.

His chest felt tight. It wasn’t like this before.

Before, I’d run out of the kitchen with a spatula in my hand and kiss him the second he walked in.

Even when I was pregnant and sick all the time, I’d wait on the couch. Make him something warm

to eat.

Something important was missing. He could feel the hole in his chest.

Then Vanessa saw him.

She ran over and grabbed his hands. “Did you get my cake? I asked for it yesterday. Did you bring

it?”

He pushed her hands away. “Long day. I’m tired. No time.”

The bakery was forty-five miles away. Four hours round trip.

He thought of me.

I never asked him to drive that far for anything.

I was always so easy. Except that one time I wanted pancakes at two in the morning. And even

then, I made the dough myself. I only asked Vanessa to cook them because I was too exhausted.

He stopped walking.

Wait. I made the dough myself.

And the massages? Vanessa learned those so she could roleplay with him. She barely touched me.

Vanessa was still talking behind him. “Caleb, what is wrong with you? It’s been almost a week since

you divorced Elena. Why haven’t you proposed yet? Are you still thinking about that bitch?”

“Vanessa! That’s enough!”

He spun around and yelled at her.

Her eyes went red and wet.

A few months ago, he would have held her. Whispered something soft.

Now he just wanted to go to bed.

He walked into the bedroom.

Their bedroom. His and mine.

He’d given me a lot of houses in the divorce. But I didn’t take this one.

He lay down and buried his face in the pillow.

He thought about me again.

When I was pregnant, I never bothered him. Even when I felt terrible, I’d send him to another room

so he could sleep.

That was how it started. That was why he ended up with Vanessa.

He breathed in deep. But the pillow didn’t smell like me anymore.

Just Vanessa’s sharp perfume.

He touched his chest. It felt hollow.

Vanessa kept pushing him to get married. But it just annoyed him.

Maybe because deep down, he knew that if he married her, there’d be no chance left with me. I’d

never forgive him then.

But all he wanted at first was a little excitement. Something new while I was pregnant.

Then Vanessa got her hooks in him. And he fell. He never meant for me to find out.

But too many things happened at once. Vanessa’s pregnancy. My labor.

The nurse called him into the room. He saw me on the table, writhing and screaming, the smell of

blood hitting him all at once. Something in his stomach twisted.

And he just opened his mouth.

He thought he didn’t love me anymore. Thought he loved Vanessa

But when i started bleeding out? His back went cold with sweat. His legs almost gave out.

Later, I asked him why he chose that moment to tell me.

He didn’t answer.

But I know why.

Because people take for granted what they think they’ll never lose.

He thought I needed him too much. Thought I loved him too much to ever walk away.

No matter what he did, I’d stay.
