What happened to him had nothing to do with me now. Alive or dead, he had it coming.

I sat in my office, took a sip of black coffee, and got back to work.

My executive assistant came running over, panicked. “Ms. Hale! Oh my God…”

“Simon is kneeling outside the building. He says if you won’t see him, he’s never getting up.”

I didn’t even lift my head. I just kept reviewing Hale Group’s overseas investment plans for next quarter.

For the next several days, Simon stayed kneeling downstairs.

On the tenth day, my assistant told me Simon had finally disappeared.

I sent someone to clean the spot where he’d been kneeling. It made my skin crawl.

The next afternoon, a gut-wrenching scream echoed from outside the Hale Group building.

“Natalie! How can you be so cold?”

“We were married for five years. If you won’t see me, I’ll die right here in front of your building.”

My assistant looked at me nervously. “Ms. Hale, should I call the cops?”

I set down my coffee cup. “Fine. If he wants to see me that badly, I’ll give him his chance.”

“Tell him to take the fire exit stairwell. All the way up.

My assistant went downstairs to deliver the message. Ms. Hale will see you.

Simon’s eyes lit up with desperate joy. He started walking toward the elevator.

My assistant called after him. “She said to take the stairs. She’s on Floor Seventy.”

Simon froze.

He hesitated for a second, then gritted his teeth and ran for the fire exit stairwell.

I sat in the massage chair in my top floor office, going through my emails at a snail’s pace.

My assistant came back every few minutes with an update.

“Ms. Hale, he made it to Floor Ten. He couldn’t catch his breath.”

“Floor Twenty. He bit the dust. His knee is bleeding.”

“Floor Thirty-Five. He threw up in the stairwell.”
