The Brother I Could Never Call Again Chapter 10

The Brother I Could Never Call Again Chapter 10

Two months later, it was almost time for college to begin.

Nora still hadn’t chosen anyone to marry.

But it was time for me to leave.

I went to say goodbye to her one last time. Mr. and Mrs. Whitfield were there too.

This time, Nora didn’t cry.

After I walked a short distance away, I vaguely heard voices behind me.

Mrs. Whitfield sighed.

“Ivy was kind to Nora. I wanted to adopt her back then. But Grant stopped me.”

“Looking back now… maybe it’s for the best.”

“We treated her well. Nora adored her. But after all these years, she never truly grew close to Grant or Nora. And now she’s going all the way across the country for college…”

She let out another sigh.

“She’s a good girl. She’s just… too distant. No matter how warmly we treated her, we could never reach her.”

My footsteps slowed. Then I smiled to myself.

Some people simply weren’t meant to become family. A forced bond was never meant to last.

Grant was waiting at the front gate.

“Nora asked me to see you off.”

I wanted to refuse. But Grant had always kept every promise he made to Nora.

I assumed he was only taking me to the airport.

Instead, he boarded the plane with me.

When we arrived at my university, he helped me check in, moved my stuff into the dorm.

Even after meeting my roommates, he smiled politely and said,

“Please take good care of her.”

Everyone immediately assumed he was my boyfriend.

I had to explain over and over again.

“He’s just the son of the family my mother works for.”

My roommates looked skeptical.

“That’s it?”

I nodded.

“That’s it. Nothing more.”

“Then why is he doing all this for you?”

I smiled.

“He’s just a kind person. Or maybe he just has too much free time.”

Grant remained silent beside me.

That night, he didn’t stay. He caught a late flight home.

Before leaving, he said,

“I’ve been busy lately. Once things settle down, I’ll come visit you.”

I paused.

In my previous life, whenever he had to work late or travel for business, he’d always let me know beforehand.

But now, there was no reason for him to tell me any of that.

I looked at him.

For the first time, I said exactly what I was thinking.

“You don’t have to come.”

Grant looked at me instinctively.

It was as if he already knew what I was about to say.

Time seemed to slow around him. Fear flickered across his face. Almost as though he were waiting to be sentenced.

I met his eyes.

“I don’t want to see you.”

Then I turned around and walked away.

Even after I’d gone a long distance, Grant was still standing there.

Motionless. Like a statue.

A few days after he left, Miles came to see me.
