The Brother I Could Never Call Again Chapter 05

The Brother I Could Never Call Again Chapter 05

The peaceful days didn’t last long.

Soon, it was Grant’s birthday.

It was his senior year—the last birthday party he’d have in high school.

His parents weren’t home. The maids were swamped.

I’d spent the entire day helping in the kitchen.

Then, at the last minute, one of the servers had to leave because of a family emergency.

I was asked to carry the food instead.

The Whitfield mansion glittered beneath countless lights, as bright as daylight.

The party was already in full swing.

Teenagers laughed, drank, and fooled around.

Some had already stripped down and jumped straight into the swimming pool.

The moment I saw the pool, I instinctively chose the longer route around it.

A familiar figure sat quietly on the sofa.

Unlike everyone else, who was either tipsy or completely drunk, Grant remained perfectly composed.

He wore a gray athletic jacket. Cool. Reserved. Even colder than he had been in my previous life.

I walked over quickly and set the fruit platter on the table.

As always, Grant didn’t spare me a single glance.

But whether it was my imagination or not, the movement of his drinking stalled for a split second.

After putting everything down, I turned to leave. A drunken boy suddenly stepped in front of me.

He wore a leering smile. His eyes roamed shamelessly over my body.

“Hey, you’re the housekeeper’s daughter, right? I’ve heard about you. You are pretty.”

“But you’re still nowhere near good enough for Grant!”

His gaze drifted lower.

“Let’s see if you’ve got anything besides a pretty face…”

As he spoke, he tilted the wine glass toward my chest.

Before the wine spilled, someone grabbed his wrist.

It was Grant.

The boy blinked, annoyed, then realization dawned.

“Wait… last week, someone said they wanted to meet the housekeeper’s daughter. And you beat him up.”

“Don’t tell me you actually—”

Grant’s face went cold.

“Her mother’s worked for my family for years. Touch her, and my parents won’t let it slide.”

The drunk sobered up immediately.

He muttered a curse under his breath, pulled his hand back, and walked away.

The crowd that had gathered to watch quickly dispersed.

I finally let out the breath I’d been holding.

Just as I was about to leave, those familiar black shoes stopped in front of me.

A faint scent of alcohol reached me.

Grant had walked over.

He’d clearly been drinking too.

He simply hadn’t lost control like everyone else.

He looked down at me. Said nothing.

For what felt like forever. My entire body grew tense.

I was just about to find an excuse to leave when he suddenly stepped closer.

Startled, I stumbled backward several steps.

A flicker of surprise crossed his eyes.

“You’re scared of me?”
