The Broken Luna Rises Chapter 02

The Broken Luna Rises Chapter 02

He froze for a second, then pure irritation flashed across his eyes.

“You’re pulling this again, aren’t you?”

“Every time Celine makes a tiny mistake, you threaten to die.”

“Elira, do you know how boring you are when you act like this?”

He dragged a chair over and sat down, crossing his long legs.

“Quit acting.”

“If you really hurt that bad, I’ll ask the healer for more painkillers.”

“Celine was terrified tonight. I have to stay with her. You stay here and think about what you’ve done.”

I didn’t say anything.

My body temperature spiked fast, and my vision blurred.

Fire burned in my chest, every breath scorching my throat.

Those were the first signs of the poison taking over.

I could practically feel my red blood cells bursting apart.

“Is Luna actually not feeling well?”

Celine tugged Lucien’s sleeve and peeked out at me.

“Her face is so red. Is she running a fever?”

Lucien glanced at me carelessly.

“Fever? She’s just mad.”

“Mad I didn’t stay here with her.”

He stood up and stepped closer to the bed, his gaze was icy.

“Elira, I’m warning you one last time.”

“Cut out this jealous, petty acts.”

“Celine is my sister. It’s only right I protect her.”

“If you give her another dirty look, I won’t hold back from ending us.”

I looked at him and managed a pale, weak smile.

“Fine.”

“Then you better protect her real good.”

Lucien snorted and took Celine’s hand.

“We’re leaving. Ignore this crazy woman.”

The door slammed shut behind them.

I closed my eyes.

A moment later, sharp heels clicked. The door opened again.

Celine came back alone. Lucien wasn’t with her.

All her shyness and sadness vanished in an instant.

In their place was pure, unmasked triumph and malice.

I didn’t look at her.

The high fever made my whole body weak, every breath tasted like scorching blood.

Celine stepped to my bed and flicked my IV tube casually.

“Aw, how sad.”

“You know what? Brother was calling you dramatic out in the hallway.”

She leaned in and lowered her voice, taunting me.

“He said you aren’t worth one strand of my hair.”

I forced my eyes open and stared at her coldly.

“Are you done?”

“Then get out.”

Celine didn’t get mad. She just grinned wider.

“Elira, you still have such a bad temper.”

“Doesn’t matter. You won’t be so tough for much longer.”

She pulled a tiny laptop from her bag.

Her fingers flew over the keyboard.

A faint blue light glowed on the screen.

“Brother says you’re faking. I don’t believe him.”

“Why don’t I make your medical chart a little more real?”

As soon as she finished speaking, the monitor by my bed let out a sharp, shrill alarm.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

The red warning light flashed wildly, bright and blinding.

My heart rate on the screen shot up to one hundred eighty.

My blood pressure plummeted, past the danger line.

The loud alarm filled the whole floor.

I watched her coldly, feeling nothing at all.

She wasn’t just a hacker. She was a heartless monster.

Footsteps rushed down the hallway.

“What’s going on?!”

Lucien burst into the ward first, his face dark with rage.

A crowd of panicked medical staff poured in behind him.

Celine stuffed the tiny laptop back into her bag the second the door opened.

She stumbled back, covered her ears, and trembled violently.

“Brother! I don’t know! I didn’t do anything!”

“The machine just started beeping! It’s so scary!”

She threw herself into Lucien’s arms, crying hard.

Lucien held her tightly, patting her back gently to calm her.

Healers rushed to my bed, fumbling with the monitor.

“That’s strange. The patient’s vitals are stable. Why is the alarm going off?”

A healer sweated as he restarted the machine.

The numbers went back to normal immediately.

Lucien’s face turned stormy.

He calmed Celine, then turned and glared at me like he wanted to cut me open.

“Elira, are you ever going to stop?!”

“You’d pull this low, dirty trick just to make me stay?!”
