The Blue Rejection That Ended My Marriage Chapter 09

The Blue Rejection That Ended My Marriage Chapter 09

I sold the house Sloane and I had lived in and bought a two–bedroom home of my own.

The day I was finally back on my feet, I went out and bought a bottle of wine to celebrate.

Miles was there when I got home.

All his old swagger was gone, and he looked awful. He seemed to have been there for a while.

The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up.

“Elliot, I sold the car. I paid the money back.”

“Sloane is suing me for the company’s losses.”

“I have nothing left. No company will even hire me now.”

His voice turned almost painfully humble.

“I’m begging you. Just say something to Sloane and ask her to drop the lawsuit. Please.”

I looked at him without expression.

“You chose this.”

He shook his head over and over, his eyes filling with tears.

“No! None of this was my fault!”

“It was Sloane. She told me to do all of it.”

“She put me in charge of your spending requests. She told me to break you down until you had no

choice but to depend on her.”

“Holding up the money for your surgery was her idea too.”

“So why is all of this being pinned on me now?”

When I didn’t answer, he mistook my silence for sympathy and reached for my arm.

I stepped back before he could touch me.

“This has nothing to do with me anymore. Don’t come looking for me again, or I’ll call the police.”

I walked into my building.

I heard him crying behind me, but I never looked back.

Once I had fully recovered, I found a new job.

I had been out of the industry for so long that keeping up with the pace was difficult at first.

I worked relentlessly, often staying up past midnight going over design plans and forcing myself to

keep going.

But even the hardest stretches eventually end.

I already had work to my name and experience in the field.

With Nathan making introductions for me, I slowly began rebuilding the career I had once walked

away from.

My work started getting noticed again, and little by little, I found my footing in the industry.

One ordinary weekend, Nathan showed up at my place carrying groceries.

“You never come out when I invite you anywhere, so we can grill out at your place, right?”

Before I could answer, he carried in a case of beer.

“Come on. We’re getting drunk tonight.”

We both laughed.

Later, as he turned some vegetables on the grill, he looked over at me.

“It’s good to see you looking like yourself again.”

I tossed a few more sausages onto the grill.

Heat and smoke drifted up from the grill.

And I thought to myself, Yeah.

It really was.

From then on, I would never make my life about supporting someone else again.

I was Elliot.

He exiled her for a crime. She carried his heir.

I could stand on my own.

There’s one more thing: I hate blue more than anything.
