The Blood Oath’s Ten-Year Silence Chapter 11

The Blood Oath’s Ten-Year Silence Chapter 11

The ten years of the Blood Oath expired on the dawn of the winter solstice.

In the grand cathedral of the White Citadel, two thousand candles of beeswax and myrrh burned with tall, steady flames. The vaulted ceilings hummed with the solemn, deep chanting of Gregorian choristers.

Before the high altar, I knelt on a cushion of crimson velvet.

Around my neck hung the ancient silver chain of the Silent Cross, bound by a small, engraved padlock of pure silver-the symbolic seal of my ten-year silence.

Don Antonio stood at my right hand, wearing the ceremonial black armor and ermine-trimmed mantle of the Supreme Constable. Over the ten years, Antonio had ceased to be merely my mentor. We had fought side-by-side; we had bound our lives with the sacred covenant of the Order. He looked

down at me with fierce, unwavering pride and profound tenderness.

The Papal Legate from the Holy See, Cardinal Morosini, stepped forward, holding a golden key.

“Elena, daughter of grace, defender of the altar,” the Cardinal’s voice echoed across the incense-filled basilica. “Your ten winters of penance are fulfilled. Your silence has broken the pride of the wicked and sheltered the sacred. By the authority of the Holy See, I release your voice.”

The golden key turned inside the silver lock with a soft, melodic click.

The silver chain fell away.

I took a deep, shuddering breath. For three thousand six hundred and fifty days, my lungs had drawn air without speaking a single human word.

“I accept the charge,” I spoke.

My voice was low, clear, and resonant, like a bronze bell struck in an empty valley. It was not weak; it was not withered. It was steady, forged in ten years of prayer, steel, and silence.

Don Antonio smiled, extending his gloved hand to raise me to my feet. Beside the altar, two acolytes draped the ceremonial mantle of the Supreme Arbiter of Sicily over my shoulders-a cape of midnight-blue velvet

embroidered with gold lions and silver crosses.

Upon my head, Cardinal Morosini placed the golden coronet of the Holy Blood.

“Arise, Lady Arbiter,” Antonio murmured softly, his hand holding mine with quiet, immovable strength. “The island awaits its judge.”

CRREEEAAAK.

The five-ton portcullis of the White Citadel, sealed for an entire decade, groaned upward on its iron chains. The massive double oak doors, studded with blackened iron rivets, swung open wide into the crisp morning light.

A long red carpet stretched from the monastery steps, down the winding limestone terrace, into the courtyard below.

Lined up along both sides of the red carpet, dressed in black funeral suits, knelt the Dons, Capos, and Consiglieres of all twelve crime families of Sicily.

Men who had commanded armies of hitmen, men who controlled billions in shipping, gambling, and real estate-every single one of them had their foreheads pressed against the damp cobblestones, trembling in utter

submission.

At the front of the steps, the Corleone underboss knelt with trembling hands, presenting a silver tray containing the signed treaties of

unconditional surrender.

“We pledge our blood to the Arbiter!” the twelve Capos chorused in unison,

their voices echoing off the mountain cliffs. “Hail to the Lady of the Silent Cross!”

I walked down the red carpet, my chin raised, the golden coronet catching the winter sun. Beside me, Don Antonio walked in lockstep, his heavy hand resting lightly on the pommel of his sword.

I did not smile. I did not gloat.

Ten years ago, they had cast me out into the dirt like a rabid dog, telling me my voice had no place in their world.

Now, my voice held the power of life and death over every syndicate from the Alps to the Mediterranean.
