The Blood Oath’s Ten-Year Silence Chapter 03

The Blood Oath’s Ten-Year Silence Chapter 03

I walked down the winding stone staircase into the subterranean vaults of the Falcone fortress.

The air beneath the estate was cold and damp, smelling of gun oil, dry cedar, and centuries of spilled blood. Here lay my personal armory: racks of custom suppressed rifles, rows of Italian stiletto daggers forged from Damascus steel, and my reloading bench.

For nine years, this room had been my sanctuary. While other young women in Palermo wore silk sundresses and drank Aperol on sunlit terraces, I spent twelve hours a day practicing tactical knife draws, memorizing cyanide compound ratios, and disassembling assault rifles blindfolded.

Father had always said: “Elena is the dagger behind the throne. Her brothers will rule the light, but she will rule the dark.”

I picked up an oily rag and wiped down the blades of my twelve throwing daggers. One by one, I clicked them into the velvet slots of the mahogany storage chest, turning the brass lock and pocketing the key.

My phone chimed on the workbench.

A group message had been sent to the Falcone inner-circle chat.

It was a video transmitted from Matteo’s private eighty-foot yacht off the coast of Capri.

The sapphire waters of the Gulf of Naples glittered beneath a brilliant Mediterranean sun. On the teak deck, Matteo was wearing a white linen shirt, raising a crystal coupe of Dom Pérignon toward the camera, laughing with head-thrown abandon.

Beside him, Carmela was reclining on a leather lounger, wearing the black Florentine lace dress I had purchased with my contract blood-money. Around her neck hung our late mother’s diamond cross. Lorenzo was leaning over her, feeding her fresh strawberries, his booming laugh echoing through the phone speaker.

“A toast!” Matteo shouted into the wind. “To the new dawn of the Falcone family! To pure blood and real loyalty! No more bad omens! No more cold-blooded shadows bringing bad luck to our house!”

The screen captured the caption beneath the video:

The true Falcone family celebrating under the Capri sun. Some people only know how to bring graveyards with them. ✨

Dozens of syndicate capos had already replied with clapping emojis and toasts of loyalty to Don Matteo and Princess Carmela.

I watched the video loop three times.

My heart beat with the slow, deliberate rhythm of a sniper lining up a six-hundred-meter shot. No tears pricked my eyes. The cold had settled deep into my marrow.

I turned to the heavy cast-iron safe in the corner of the workshop.

Inside lay the deed to my share of the Sicilian olive vineyards, worth fourteen million euros, along with my offshore bank bearer bonds. I took out the thick leather portfolio and laid it flat in the center of the workbench.

Beneath the deeds, I found the antique silver pectoral cross Father had given me on my sixteenth birthday, engraved with the Falcone falcon and our family motto: Sanguis Ante Omnia—Blood Above All.

Blood Above All.

What a bitter, laughable lie.

I walked to the roaring iron smelting hearth where I used to melt down spent bullet casings. I took the silver cross from around my neck.

I tossed it into the red-hot crucible.

The silver hissed. Within forty seconds, the proud falcon crest softened, collapsed, and liquefied into a glowing puddle of white-hot slag.

The Falcone name was gone from my soul.

I wiped down the granite bench, locked the iron grates of the armory, and left the master keys lying on top of the deeds.

Tomorrow, the church bells of the Order would toll.

And the daughter who had bled for this house would cease to exist.
