The Billionaire Who Killed Our Son Now Begs Me To Save His Daughter Chapter 06

Liana stood there frozen. Her face shifted from shock to anger.

“Who do you think you—”

“Your daughter has less than nineteen hours of oxygen left at thirty-six hundred feet.”

Grant grabbed Liana’s arm.

“What do you want?” he demanded. “We don’t have any problem with you. We’ve never even met.”

“If I did something to offend you, I’m sorry. Whatever your terms are, why can’t you lay your cards on the table?”

“Terms?”

I smiled.

“You can’t afford them.”

“Try me.”

Grant stepped closer.

“What can’t I afford?”

“Give me back my son’s life. Can you do that?”

The words slipped out before I could stop them.

The air went dead.

Grant froze. Confusion flickered across his face.

“Your son?” he said. “What does your son have to do with my daughter?”

Liana looked up at me too. Her eyes were full of suspicion.

“What are you talking about?” she asked. “Who are you?”

I didn’t answer.

I’d said too much.

“It doesn’t matter,” I said.

I stepped back and pulled myself together.

“I’m not taking the job. You should leave.”

“Stop!”

Grant lunged forward and grabbed my wrist.

“What did you mean by that? Explain yourself.”

I tried to pull free. He didn’t let go.

“Let go of me.”

“Not until you explain.”

“I said let go.”

Chase rushed forward to pull him off. One of the guards shoved him back with an arm.

“I’m going to say this one last time.”

My voice was low.

“Let me go. Or your daughter dies.”

His fingers loosened a little. But he didn’t fully let go.

“Are you threatening me?”

I yanked my reddened wrist out of his grip. My arm scraped against a metal rack and a deep gash split open.

“Every second you waste, her oxygen runs lower,” I said. “Instead of standing here with me, you should be looking for another option.”

“There’s no Plan B!”

Liana’s voice went sharp.

“You’re the only one who can go down there! How can you just let her die? Don’t you have a conscience?”

“You’re giving me a lecture on conscience?”

The word sounded ridiculous coming from her.

I turned and faced Liana.

She flinched at my look. Instinctively, she stepped back behind Grant.

“Ten years ago, a twenty-three-year-old boy was trapped at the bottom. His oxygen ran out minute by minute. His mother knelt on the ground begging for help until her voice went raw.”

“Do you know what that feels like?” I asked. “Watching the seconds tick by. Knowing your child is suffocating in the dark. And the only sub that could save him got rerouted somewhere else.”

My voice cracked because I was almost shouting.

“Sent to save someone who swallowed water in the shallows.”

Liana’s face changed.

Completely changed.

Her lips started trembling. Her fingers unconsciously clutched Grant’s sleeve.

And Grant. He stood there like he’d been struck by lightning.

“You… how do you know about that?”

His voice came out soft. Like something was stuck in his throat.

“No one outside knows about that…”

“Yeah,” I said. “No one knows.”

I looked at him.

“You covered it up well. Your son died. You told everyone it was equipment failure. No one ever knew the real reason.”

“Who the hell…”

“You want to know who I am?”

I walked up to him. Pushed my hair back and wiped the dirt off my face.

He stared for a long time. Then his pupils dilated.

Slowly, his face went ghost-white. It took him a long time to choke the words out.

“…Sylvie?”

Liana’s head snapped up. Disbelief written all over her face.

“No,” she whispered. “That’s not possible…”

I looked at the two of them standing there. Completely stunned.

Ten years.

“Long time no see.”
