The Billionaire Alpha’s Farming Luna: Too Late to Please the Herbal Queen! Chapter 02

His face was filled with irritation and disgust as he spoke.

It seemed he already regretted bringing this country peasant back.

I took a deep breath and spoke calmly.

“Alpha, I cannot break the marriage bond with him. He is very clingy, he won’t let me go.”

Graham slammed his hand on the table.

“So you can’t bear to leave some backwoods brute?”

“He just wants to cling to you so he can leech money from the Ashford Pack, doesn’t he? The Ashford Pack is not a charity. If he doesn’t know his place, I’ll put him in it.”

With that, he pulled out a few thin bills and threw them into my face.

“Take this money and get rid of him tomorrow. Don’t cause a scandal for the Ashford Pack.”

The bills floated down and scattered on the floor.

I caught the mocking, disdainful smirk flitting across Nell’s face.

In her eyes, so what if I was the real daughter?

She was marrying into power, she was educated and she had a powerful backer. For the rest of my life, I could only be stomped beneath her feet, looking up at her in envy.

“Maren, you aren’t exactly young anymore. Surely you can’t still be hung up on some rough country brute?” She covered her mouth and giggled. “You really must be desperate.”

A flash of humiliated anger crossed Calder’s face.

“Maren, I’m warning you—don’t you dare bring that man back here. If you do, you can pack your things and get out too.”

I really didn’t want to waste my breath on them, so I submissively agreed once more.

Calder and Nell exchanged a contemptuous smile.

To them, my quick compliance meant nothing more than a desperate fear of losing the wealth and noble status I had just gained.

Finally, Graham waved his hand in disappointment and ordered the butler to take me to my room.

Looking around the tiny attic, I sat on the bed indifferently.

I remembered this place. I recalled playing hide-and-seek with Calder once; I had hidden behind some clutter, and when Calder didn’t show up for a long time, I fell asleep.

When I woke up, I saw Calder kneeling in the living room while Graham struck him hard with a cane.

“I told you to keep an eye on your sister! How could you lose her? If we don’t find Maren, I’ll beat you to death!”

When they finally found me, Calder held me and cried, his eyes full of relief, without a single word of blame.

But everything had changed.

As I was looking at the drawings I had scratched onto the wall as a child, Nell pushed the door open and walked in.

She still wore that hypocritical facade, tightly grasping my hands.

“I’m so sorry, Maren. I never meant to take your place, but Mom and Dad already see me as their own, so it’s hard for me to just give it back to you now.”

Then she added with a hint of smugness.

“Don’t worry, Maren. You’re welcome to take anything of mine that catches your eye. I’ve never cared much for those trinkets.”

“Dad and Calder buy me too much anyway, I can’t even use it all.”

I lifted my gaze to the emerald necklace around her neck. It was an heirloom belonged to my mother.

When I was little, she would often put it around my neck, smiling as she spoke.

“Maren, when you grow up, I’ll give you this necklace so you can wear it on your wedding day.”

I slowly pointed at it and smiled faintly.

“Then give me this. Looks nice.”

Nell’s face instantly stiffened.

She probably hadn’t expected me to be so shameless as to ask for something so valuable right away.

After all, my previous compliance had made her think I was just a cowardly woman who would never dare to claim anything.

I stared straight into her eyes, watching her smugness turn into shock.

“What? Were you just running your mouth?”

“Or are you flaunting yourself in front of me while keeping what belongs to me?”

Nell’s face twisted from bright red to a deep, furious purple. Suddenly, she yanked the necklace off, snapping the chain, and burst into a loud sob.

“Maren! Mom gave that to me! How could you destroy it?”
