After work, I went back to the hotel alone. 

Arthur’s car was parked outside the office building. 

Derek spat on the sidewalk as he passed by and ignored Arthur’s grim expression. 

But I walked up to him and asked, “Something on your mind?” 

Arthur’s face twisted into a groveling smile. He shoved a 

cashier’s check into my hand. 

“There was some misunderstanding. I listened to bad advice 

and almost hurt you, Chief Shaw.” 

“A small gift. I hope you’ll think nothing of it.” 

I looked at the check in my hand. One million dollars. I raised 

an eyebrow. 

“Mr. Sterling is being this generous just to apologize?” 

Arthur looked embarrassed. He rubbed his nose and finally explained why he came. 

“I came to apologize to you and Mr. Cross.” 

“But considering how he looks at me now, I’m worried about the bidding meeting in three days.” 

I understood immediately. Arthur wanted me to convince 

Derek to give him the investment spot. 

I looked at the check. I didn’t say yes or no. Instead, I said 

thoughtfully, “Mr. Sterling, if it were just me, maybe. But you 

know Mr. Cross.” 

“After what happened at your estate, getting him to agree to anything would be a tough sell.” 

Arthur thought I had agreed. His face lit up. He promised on 

the spot. 

“I knew someone as young as you who made it to this position must be extraordinary.” 

“Don’t worry. Just agree to help me at the bidding meeting. I’ll 

handle Mr. Cross.” 

I heard the murderous intent in his voice, but I kept leading 

him. “Handle him how?” 

“Like you handled Julian, the impostor who pretended to be your daughter, and her mother? You want to take care of Derek 

too?” 

“He’s the company’s regional representative. He has top tier 

security with him 24/7.” 

Arthur just smiled mysteriously and told me not to worry 

about it. 

He promised that if I helped him, he would make sure I kept my position as head of Transatlantic’s regional operations. 

I didn’t say no. 

Not because I was betraying anyone. 

But because I really wanted to see how the monster would 

react when he found out he was the lamb being led to the 

slaughter. 

This was the man who had let his daughter murder innocent people and who had killed my parents in my past life. 

Derek went missing the day before the bidding meeting. 

The company filed a police report, but nothing turned up. 

I had no choice. I was put in charge of representing the company at the bidding meeting in his place. 

The massive conference room was full of familiar faces. All of them had been at Arthur’s estate that day. 

They all kept their heads down like cowards, just like when the sheriff questioned them. 

I finally understood just how powerful the richest man in New England really was. 

Luckily, I had never underestimated him. 

Just as Arthur handed in his bid, confident that I would announce him as the winner and secure the investment, a team of federal agents walked in and addressed him directly. 

“Arthur Sterling, you are under arrest for multiple murders, bribery of a corporate executive, and kidnapping.” 

Arthur tried to argue. 

But the recording of our entire conversation from that day in his car, which I had made secretly, sealed his fate. 

And Derek’s testimony sealed it. Derek was there in person, even though he was supposed to have been kidnapped by 

Arthur, he had managed to escape. 

The arrogant rich man was convicted and sentenced to life in 

prison without parole. 

The rats who had lived under his thumb, whether out of fear or greed, were all rooted out. 

The business world went through a complete shake–up. 

When it was all over, I chose a self–made tech entrepreneur with a clean background as the company’s investment 

partner. 

I spent my days in the office drinking coffee, monitoring data, and easily pulling in half a million a year. 

When I went home to visit my parents, the neighborhood kids still loved me. 

No matter how fussy a child was, the moment they saw me, they smiled and reached out their arms for me to hold. 

But this time, no one was going to use me as a scapegoat. 

I finally got to live a life that was truly my own.
