The Anniversary Gift My Son Gave Me Was Hiding My Husband’s Biggest Secret Chapter 06

Day three.

The male was still full of energy.

The female was chased all over the pen. When she couldn’t run anymore, he pinned her down.

There was blood on the ground.

Mr. Tanner had a water trough added. He was afraid she’d die of thirst.

Day four.

The female couldn’t even stand up anymore.

The male kept mounting her anyway.

She couldn’t even cry out.

Day five.

The vet came. He said the female had severe injuries-a broken hind leg. She needed treatment.

Mr. Tanner asked me what I wanted to do.

I said, “Treat her. Then put her back in when she’s healed.”

Day six.

The hospital called.

Serena’s body-the real one, still in a vegetative state-was crashing. Vital signs dropping fast.

I hung up and looked at the female in the pen.

She lay there, eyes half closed. The wool around her mouth was soaked.

Not from spitting. From drooling.

She didn’t have the strength to spit anymore.

Day seven.

The male finally stopped.

Not because his heat ended. Because the female wasn’t moving.

Mr. Tanner told me to go in and see her.

I stepped into the pen and crouched down.

The female’s eyes opened a crack. She saw me. A faint, breathy sound came from her mouth.

Like she was begging.

I looked at her for a long time.

“You know what you did to me in the past life?”

“Now it’s your turn.”

“Serena, I never owed you anything. So why did you hurt me, over and over again?”

The alpaca’s mouth twitched. A weak ptooey came out.

No spit. Just a breath.

Her eyes closed for good.

Same day. The hospital declared Serena Ashford brain dead.

Owen was still overseas. He didn’t know yet.

Evening of day seven. Owen dragged his suitcase through the door.

Liam followed behind, holding a toy he’d bought abroad. The second he walked in, he asked, “Where’s Sugar?”

I said, “I sent her to the circus.”

“What?!”

He dropped his suitcase and ran out the door.

I followed behind, slow and steady.

At the circus, Mr. Tanner was having his people clean out the pen.

The alpaca’s body was already gone. All that was left on the ground was a dark, stained patch.

Owen burst in. His face was white as paper.

“You’re insane! You knew she-”

He stopped.

I looked him in the eye. “I know. She was Serena.”

Owen’s whole body shook. He collapsed to the ground. “How… how did you…”

I pulled out the investigative documents I’d gathered and threw them in his face.

Right then, crying came from behind me.

Liam ran in. He saw the empty pen. The black stain on the ground. He wailed.

“Bad woman! You killed my mommy! Give her back!”

He charged at me to hit me. I caught his arm.

“So you knew too. You knew your real mother was Serena. I was just the tool who gave birth to you.”

“Too bad. Even though your father and your real mother used you to give me that thing as a gift, they still lost.”

I let him go, stood up, and walked away.

Behind me, Liam let out a heartbroken scream.

I didn’t look back.
