I drove back to the Silver Moon pack house, gave my parents a brief update, and then headed straight back to my own apartment, where I slept soundly until dawn.

When I woke up, I scrolled through my feed and, completely unsurprisingly, saw a post announcing that Elara’s curse had been successfully broken.

I gave the post a polite like, genuinely happy that she was cured.

I had barely taken two bites of my breakfast when Alaric showed up at my door again.

The moment Alaric pressed the doorbell, Selene heard it too.

A loud commotion immediately erupted at the entrance, followed by fierce shouting.

I opened the front door to find Alaric standing there, dripping wet from head to toe, looking thoroughly humiliated after Selene had clearly dumped a glass of water over him.

The second he saw me, he forced the furious, purple flush on his face back down.

He managed a warm smile, holding up a paper bag. “I brought you breakfast.”

I glanced at the sandwich in his hand. “Did Elara get one too?”

Alaric winced. “I know I handled everything horribly, Joanna. But Elara’s surgery is over now. There are absolutely no obstacles left between us. Can you please forgive me?”

He sounded entirely sincere.

Yet, he was the same man who hadn’t even attempted to flinch away when Elara kissed him yesterday.

The traits I used to view as persistence now just felt like shameless harassment.

Alaric continued, “You’ll forgive me eventually. It’s just a matter of time. I’ll prove how dedicated I am.”

Without waiting for an invitation, he began walking into my living room. “Let’s eat breakfast before it gets cold.”

I found the entire situation hysterical. “Are you actually planning on holding another Mating Ceremony with me?”

Sensing that I would eventually give myself an out, he didn’t seem the least bit surprised by my apparent “compromise.”

In fact, a smug, self-satisfied look washed over his face, practically screaming: Wow, she’s so easy to handle.

I pushed further. “Are you going to invite the exact same crowd that watched you marry Elara last time?”

His face instantly soured.

In contrast, a bright smile spread across my lips. “Alaric, you are painfully arrogant. We broke up. Do you understand what that means?”

He stared at me in pure disbelief.

Even though he was the one who had pursued me initially, he had always held the dominant cards in our relationship.

He knew that despite my fierce exterior, I was someone who struggled to express love.

But I had compromised an immense amount for him over the years.

Alaric gripped my hand tightly. “I don’t agree to a breakup. Stop talking out of anger, Joanna. Please, just stop being mad at me, okay?”

Beside us, Selene glanced down at her phone. Her expression tightened with sudden panic, and she violently ripped my hand out of Alaric’s grip.

She looked dead serious, a rarity for her. “Joanna! Kael just climbed onto the rooftop observation deck! He said he’s going to jump! We need to get upstairs right now!”

When I burst onto the rooftop, panting for breath, Kael was sitting completely outside the safety railing, his legs dangling over a sheer, dizzying drop.

“Kael!” I screamed, terror seizing my throat. “Get back over here right now!”

Kael turned his head slowly, those amber eyes that had faithfully followed me for years now webbed with thick red lines of exhaustion.

“Joanna,” he said, his voice terribly raspy. “I’ve loved you in secret for eight years.”

The howling wind whipped his messy black hair across his face.

“A whole year before Alaric even met you,” Kael said, his gaze locking onto mine with fierce intensity. “I was going to wait until you sorted everything out to confess, but he dared to humiliate you like that! If you take him back, I’m jumping right now!”

Alaric stood a few paces behind me, looking utterly bewildered, clearly never having viewed this young guard as a legitimate threat.

Staring at Kael, a sharp ache pierced through my chest.

My mind flashed back to years ago when I was just a young girl and he was the little shadow constantly trailing behind me. I had told him that as the future Alpha’s daughter, I had to be strong. He had looked up at me and said, “Then I’ll be your shield.”

“I’m not taking him back,” I said, raising both hands to show I wasn’t approaching aggressively. “Kael, please just come back over the railing. We can talk about this.”

“Genuinely?” Kael’s eyes ignited with a sudden, brilliant spark.

“Genuinely.”

He immediately made a move to climb back over.

Selene let out a loud, deliberate cough from beside me.

Kael’s movements froze instantly. He dropped back into his dangerous position, stubbornly hoisting his chin. “No, what if you’re just tricking me? Unless… unless you agree to legally bind with me right now.”
