At noon the next day, I left Craig’s room wrapped in the clothes he had nearly torn off me. I walked straight into Jane, who was carrying a bowl of soup toward Ashton’s room. A vivid red mark stood out on her neck. She looked me up and down, then curled her lips in contempt. “In a hurry, Ms. Stone?” She raised her chin and blocked my path. “Did you do something shameful? Imagine the scandal if people heard you seduced a man old enough to be your father just to gain power.” I met her eyes. “You seem to be describing yourself.” Jane gave an angry snort. “Save the clever remarks. Someone like you could never compare to me. I’m going to marry Ashton and become Luna. You are nothing but a cheap Omega men use to satisfy themselves.” I pulled my loose clothing more securely around me. In my previous life, I had heard plenty of stories about young she-wolves scheming their way into Craig’s bed for status, only to be thrown out afterward. I was different. I had succeeded. Craig had marked me last night. If I had been able to conceive Ashton’s children in my last life, I could certainly bear Craig’s in this one. My gaze dropped to the soup in her hands. “You should hurry inside and take care of Alpha Ashton, Ms. Yates. That soup looks as if it is getting cold.” I was turning away when Ashton came into view. He slipped an arm around Jane’s waist and nuzzled her neck. “Were you exhausted last night, Jane? Come back to bed with me for a while.” Jane pushed out her glossy lips in a pout. “I still need to train. I can’t stay with you all day.” As she spoke, she glanced at me. “Ms. Stone always seems to have so much free time. Sometimes I envy Omegas with no real ability. Life must be easy.” Ashton scoffed. “She is nobody. Baby, forget the training grounds. You’re mine now, and you’ll be Luna to the future Alpha King. You don’t need to train anymore.” Jane lowered her lashes coyly. “I have to, darling. I want to become a Luna worthy of you.” Their performance made my stomach turn. I started to leave. Then Ashton addressed me. His icy gaze settled on my face. “Maria told me you were the one who sent for Jane to help me. At least you’ve learned some sense. Remember your place from now on. A worthless Omega should not fantasize about things she can never have.” I gave an indifferent nod. “Understood.” Jane had relieved his rut this time. Now I could sit back and see whether the two of them truly became the honored Alpha King and Luna they believed they deserved to be. I moved to go, but Ashton blocked me again. His eyes fixed on the angry red scratches across my neck. “Who did this?” He clamped a hand around my arm. A feral growl roughened his vicious voice. “Are you so desperate for a man that you couldn’t wait a single night?” His grip was brutal, and my already loose clothes slipped lower. I tugged them back into place with my free hand and looked at him with open disgust despite the pain in my arm. “Let go of me, Ashton.” His face reddened, and his fingers only tightened. “Was it one of the Betas guarding the gate? The moment you failed to seduce me, you threw yourself at another man? How filthy can you get?” He glared as though he wanted to throw me out of the estate himself. I was about to tell him to go to hell when Jane cried out behind him, “It’s burning me!” Ashton released me at once and ran to her without looking back. Jane crouched amid spilled soup, clutching her arm and sobbing. “I burned myself. It hurts…” He hurried to pull her upright, wrapped her in his arms, and murmured comfort into her hair. With her chin resting on his shoulder and one arm hooked around his neck, Jane shot me the triumphant look of a winner. I returned it with a cold stare. In my last life, Jane had kept Ashton dangling while flirting with several Alphas from other packs. Most were much older than she was because her only real ambition had always been to become an Alpha King’s Luna. Once Ashton married me, she immediately attached herself to a neighboring Pack Alpha and secretly fled to join him. But that Pack Alpha was unstable and weak, and his pheromones frequently ran wild. He abused Jane every day. She tried everything and still could not escape. In the end, she managed to kill him, but with his last breath he shifted into a wolf and mauled her to death. Ashton had remained convinced that she died because of him. … That night, Craig returned from the military camp and opened my bedroom door. I shot to my feet. I had not expected him to come for me so soon. “Alpha…” I had no idea what I meant to him, so I tested the title cautiously. Without a word, he pulled me into his arms. His low, hoarse voice brushed my ear. “I spent the entire day missing you.” Craig dragged his lips possessively along my neck, and every muscle in my body went rigid. I had never imagined the Alpha King would express his desire so openly. For a moment, I had no idea how to respond. “Evelyn,” he murmured. “Look at me.” I slowly lifted my face to meet his gaze. A faint smile touched his mouth before he bent and kissed me. Craig and I spent the whole night tangled together. I slept until noon the following day. When I saw another set of clothes ruined by his hands, I could only sigh. Standing before the mirror, I studied the marks covering my body and decided anyone who claimed Craig was impotent had to be insane. Then a strange, delicate sensation stirred low in my abdomen. I rested a hand over my belly. Craig had permanently marked me, and we had slept together again last night. With an Alpha King’s fertility, I was almost certainly pregnant. I was going to be a mother. And Ashton would no longer be the Alpha King’s only heir. A quiet laugh escaped me. Hatred filled my eyes, leaving no warmth at all in my smile.
