The 99th Chance I Gave You Chapter 05

Nathaniel’s signing hand stopped abruptly. The tip of his pen tore straight through the paper.

“When did this happen? Who approved it? Why wasn’t I told?”

The HR Director looked even more confused.

“The resignation notice was submitted last night. You approved it yourself this morning.”

After that sentence fell, Nathaniel froze completely, as if the ground beneath his feet/had collapsed.

That night, he sat alone in the living room and emptied every bottle in the liquor cabinet.

But even by dawn, he still couldn’t figure out the answer.

The next day, as soon as Nathaniel Fenton arrived at the company, Sylvia followed him in.

“Mr. Fenton, this is yesterday’s contract.”

Sylvia placed the file on his desk, then walked to Nathaniel’s side with practiced ease and rested one

hand on his shoulder.

Before, this had been the kind of flirtation neither of them needed to name.

But now, Nathaniel suddenly felt uncomfortable.

He sat up straight and opened the file.

After reading only 1 page, his brows furrowed.

Even the most basic clauses were sloppy and scattered, with no professionalism at all.

Not to mention the default clauses that were enough to bankrupt the company.

The entire contract was basically full of problems.

Before, every contract had passed through my hands 3 times before it reached him.

I blocked every risk that could harm the company in advance.

But this one…

Nathaniel slammed the contract onto the desk, his voice going cold.

“Who drafted this contract?”

“Do they have even the most basic competence?”

“Call Eleanor Hart in here.”

“I want to ask whether she still wants to be Legal Director!”

Sylvia’s face turned ugly in an instant.

“Mr. Fenton, I drafted it.”

Nathaniel’s anger got stuck.

He looked at the tears quickly rising in Sylvia’s eyes and the wronged look on her face, and for the first time, he felt an indescribable helplessness.

She raised a hand to wipe her tears, her voice so soft it sounded like it might break.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Fenton. It was my fault…”

“Maybe Director Hart was right. I’m not suited for this position. I only cause trouble for

After saying that, she turned to leave.

Nathaniel instinctively grabbed her.

But when he met Sylvia’s tear-filled eyes, he suddenly froze.

Eleanor Hart never looked at him like that.

She was proud.

you.”

No matter what happened, she always found a way to solve it, instead of making herself look like the victim like Sylvia did.

Even when facing his anger, she only calmly told him, “Sylvia isn’t careful enough, and she can’t handle the responsibilities of your secretary.”

That was why every time Sylvia caused a problem, Eleanor Hart ended up cleaning up the mess.

And because of that, whenever Sylvia got into trouble later, he had gotten used to pushing Eleanor Hart out to handle it.

Thinking of that, Nathaniel’s words of comfort lodged in his throat.

His hand slowly loosened from Sylvia’s.

“You can go out first.”

Sylvia’s expression turned strained.

She didn’t get the comfort she wanted, and her tears almost fell again.

Nathaniel saw it, but only rubbed his brow impatiently.

“Redo this contract. Make sure there are no problems before you submit it again.”

Sylvia bit her lip. In the end, she left the office unwillingly.

A colleague I got along with filmed that scene and sent it to my phone.

“Director Hart, that junior secretary who kept stealing everyone’s credit got kicked out today.

Finally, someone made her face the music.”

In the office, Nathaniel called my number over and over, but he still couldn’t get through.

While telling himself I was only still angry, he couldn’t help looking at my empty workstation.

That empty chair made him more and more irritated.

He couldn’t even focus on the work in front of him.

In the end, Nathaniel couldn’t hold back and called the HR Director in.

“Mr. Fenton, what can I do for you?”

“Did Eleanor Hart take the day off?”

Nathaniel looked at the documents in front of him, his tone sounding casual.

The HR Director froze and looked at him in confusion.

“Director Hart has already resigned.”

“What?!”

With trembling hands, he opened his inbox and clicked the only resignation notice.

Only when he saw “Eleanor Hart” in the signature did the belated panic finally seize his chest.

“Withdraw it.”

He lifted his head, his voice tight.

“Withdraw this application now.”

The HR Director wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, his voice shaking too.

“Mr. Fenton, the process is already complete. It can’t be withdrawn from the system arrymore…
