The 33rd Divorce from the Don Chapter 07

Adela’s POV

I took it, face expressionless as I flipped through. The Salvatore family was on the verge of bankruptcy, their business empire had collapsed by half in two

years. Massimo Salvatore, once the untouchable New York don, was now drowning in debt.

“He’s been looking for you these past two years, Father said carefully. ‘Used every connection he had.”

I closed the folder: “Not my problem.”

“That’s my girl,” Father nodded approvingly, paused. “Forrest came by again last week. He wants to formally ask for your hand.

My fingers stilled. I looked up at Father.

“I like the young man, Father said, eyes soft. “He respects you, appreciates your capabilities, treats you as an equal partner. More importantly-he loves

you.”

I stayed silent, turned to look at the glittering cityscape outside.

‘Still thinking about that bastard?” Father sighed.

“No, Papa,’ I turned back, eyes steady. “Just thinking about how stupid I was back then.”

I stood, walked over to Father: “Forrest is a good man. I accept.”

Father smiled, patted my hand: ‘I’ll give him the news tomorrow. He’ll be thrilled.”

Just then, the intercom crackled.

“Signorina Moreau, we have a situation in the VIP lounge. The security guard sounded tense.

I frowned: “What’s going on?”

“A man just won eight hands straight. Five million in chips. Now he’s claiming we’re cheating, demands to see whoever’s in charge.”

“And… the guard hesitated. “He refuses to leave. Already took down three of our guys. We can’t restrain him.”

Father stood: “Need me to handle it?”

“No,” I grabbed my jacket. “I’ll deal with it myself. Could use the exercise.”

I strode into the VIP lounge in my heels. Every eye turned toward me.

Three guards lay on the floor groaning. At the table, a man sat with his back to me, chips piled high in front of him.

‘Heard someone has a problem with my casino. My voice cut through the room.

The man didn’t turn around. Just laughed softly.

That laugh made my chest tighten-too familiar.

“Your casino?” The man’s voice was hoarse. ‘Long time no see, Adela. Moving up in the world, I see.”

He slowly turned around.

Massimo.

I froze for a split second.

He looked terrible-half his hair had gone white, hanging disheveled. Gaunt to the point where his cheekbones jutted out, eyes sunken and bloodshot. Nothing like the don he used to be.

But it was just a moment. I quickly regained my composure.

*Security.” I said coldly.

Four guards rushed forward. Massimo blocked my path, voice shaking: “Wait… Adela… I just need to talk to you…”

I stepped back: “There’s nothing to say.”

“Please… Massimo’s eyes filled with desperation. “Five minutes… that’s all I’m asking…”

“I’m dying…” he suddenly pulled open his collar, exposing skeletal collarbones. “Stage four liver cancer. Doctors say three months at most…”

“Adela, I know I don’t deserve to ask… but for the sake of-

“For the sake of what?” I cut him off, lips curving into a mocking smile. “Because you’re dying? Massimo, why should I care?”

“I was wrong…” Massimo’s voice cracked. “These past two years, every single day I’ve regretted it… thought about you…”

‘I threw Claudia out… sent her to a psychiatric facility in Switzerland… I don’t want the Salvatore family anymore… transferred all my assets to your

name…”

‘Adela, please…

He suddenly dropped to his knees.

The once-untouchable New York don, kneeling on the casino floor.

The whole room went still.

I looked down at him: “Get up. You re embarrassing yourself.”

‘I won’t, Massimo looked up, eyes red. Not unless you forgive me-

“Forgive you?” I laughed coldly. “Massimo, who the hell do you think you are? What makes you think I give a DAMN if you live or die?”

“When you chose Claudia, when you made me kneel in the rain, when I miscarried and you didn’t even visit-did you think about today?”

“Now you’re dying so you come crawling to me for forgiveness? My voice grew colder. “Don’t you think that’s PATHETIC?”

Massimo trembled: “I know… I know I’m a bastard… but Adela, I really do love you…”

“Love me?” I burst out laughing. That’s fucking RICH.

Just then, a gentle male voice spoke up.

‘Darling.”
