Ten Years Later, I Woke Up as the Wife of the Mafia Heir I Once Hated Chapter 05

The second the door clicked shut, I started tearing through everything in that room.

The bedroom was massive—huge windows, fancy furniture, the whole Charleston aesthetic. But I didn’t care about any of that. I searched every corner I could find. Drawers, cabinets, nightstands, even under the bed. Nothing.

Half an hour later, I came up empty. Frustrated, I walked into the closet to change. That’s when something at the bottom of the jewelry cabinet caught my eye.

It was like some instinct was pulling me toward it. Telling me what I needed was right there.

I crouched down without thinking and slowly pulled the drawer open.

The next second…

A yellowed diary sat right in front of me.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew this diary too well. It was the same one I’d kept from eighteen all the way through college. Every embarrassing crush, every late-night thought, every silly detail I’d scribbled down in my dorm room.

In that moment, it felt like I’d just opened a door that had been buried in the dark for years. And behind that door? All the secrets I’d somehow forgotten over the past decade.

My hands started shaking. My heart was pounding so loud I could hear it in my ears.

But when I actually opened the diary, my stomach dropped.

It was wrecked. Like someone had deliberately torn it apart. Almost every page had a missing corner, chunks of text just gone.

From eighteen to twenty, the diary was packed with memories of me and Seb. I read through those entries and couldn’t help cringing. How was I that childish back then?

I flipped faster. As I skimmed through the incomplete entries, I felt more and more stunned. So Seb and I had really been together for years.

I desperately needed to know what happened next. Why did we break up? How did I end up married to Alexander Charleston?

But right then, the diary just… stopped. The last entry was dated when I was twenty-one.

I frantically flipped through the remaining blank pages, hoping for something, anything. But there was nothing.

I let out a breath and wanted to shake my future self. Why didn’t I protect something this important?

Just as I was about to close the diary and leave…

A small torn piece of paper slipped out from a hidden compartment.

There were only a few words on it. But they made my blood run cold.

[Run!]

[Leave him!]

[He’s a psychopath!]

I stood there, staring at the handwriting I knew better than my own. My mind went completely blank.

Him?

Alex?

So…

My breakup with Seb. My marriage to Alex. It had all been orchestrated by Alex?

The answer hit me like a punch to the chest. I hadn’t become Mrs. Charleston willingly. Alex had forced me away from Seb somehow, then kept me trapped by his side.

Everything clicked into place.

I didn’t know what to believe anymore. I didn’t even dare keep thinking. Only one thought remained in my mind.

Divorce.

I had to leave Alex.

I had to get out of this suffocating estate.

My breathing came faster and faster. My head was pounding like it was about to split open. My hands gripped the diary so tight my knuckles went white.

I pressed a hand to my chest and slowly forced myself up. Tears of fear burned in my eyes.

Divorce. I had to get away. Get away from here. Get away from Alex.

The moment I stood up…

A figure moved in the corner of my vision.

My whole body locked up.

The next second, a low voice came from behind me.

“Elena.”

“What are you doing?”
