Snatched Two Husbands, But They Both Remember the Fire Chapter 06

Snatched Two Husbands, But They Both Remember the Fire Chapter 06

Morning came. Sun through the curtains. Our arms tangled together.

Alessia was at the door. Knocking like Rocco last night.

“Boss! Boss! Problem!”

I sat up. Luca made a sound behind me. Pulled me closer.

“What.”

“Sophia’s at the main house. Crying to the Don again.”

“So?”

“But-Mama Ross is pushing too. Saying you’re a monster. A man-stealer. Ruining the family. She says if Don doesn’t fix it, she’s getting the Families together to kick you out.”

“That’s what she said?”

“Basically.”

“Not bad,” I said. “She’s got a way with words.”

“Boss-”

“I’m serious.” I got up. Luca’s hand fell off my hip. “The madder Sophia gets, the happier I get. Simple.”

Alessia stood in the doorway. Opening her mouth. Closing it.

“What.”

“Rocco…”

“What about him?”

“He didn’t sleep. Sat in the yard all night.”

My hand stopped on my earring.

“Then?”

“Then he showered. Changed. Left.”

“Where?”

“To the main house.”

I stood there.

“So he’s there now?”

“Yeah. With Sophia. In front of Mama Ross. In front of Don. And he said-”

“Say what?”

Alessia swallowed.

“He said no one took him. He came on his own. He’s not a victim. He’s… he said… ‘if she goes to jail, I go

with her.”

I put down my lipstick. Looked in the mirror.

Rocco. What are you doing.

Alexander’s order came at noon.

James. His bodyguard. Ex-Navy SEAL. Always had the same face. Always stood like a knife.

He cleared his throat.

“Boss. Don wants you at the main house. About Rocco and Luca.”

“A hearing?”

“That’s what he said.”

James’s face did something weird. He cleared his throat again. Then he did Alexander’s voice. Perfect.

“Big sister, please come save me! Mama Ross won’t stop talking! Sophia’s been crying for a whole day! She only stopped two hours for lunch! I can’t take it anymore! If you don’t come, I’m taking your house!”

I sighed.

“Let’s go.”

Luca was putting on a shirt. Third button. He looked up.

“Suit?”

“Whatever. It’s just Sophia.”

He smiled. Pulled out a navy jacket. Light pants. Silver tie.

Looked in the mirror.

“Good?”

“Fine.”

“That means good.”

“Go get Rocco,” I told Alessia.

Her face went stiff.

“He won’t talk to me. Last time I knocked, he almost put the door on my face.”

“Try.”

“I did. He said one thing.”

“What?”

“Go away.’”

“Then tell him to go away to the car.

Ten minutes. Rocco was at the garage.

Black coat. Grey sweater inside. Black boots. Hair down in his face. Looked younger.

Dark under his eyes. Like charcoal.

Didn’t sleep.

But he looked better than me. Too good. He saw Luca with his arm around me. Just frowned a little.

No yelling. No throwing. No nothing.

Just sat in the car. Across from me. Closed his eyes.

The Cadillac went through Manhattan. Buildings going past.

On the bridge, Rocco opened his eyes.

“Luca. Your tie.”

Luca looked down. His tie was fine. Perfect. He touched it anyway.

“Thanks.”

“Welcome,” Rocco said. “You just look too happy. It’s annoying.”

“Don’t look then.”

“I’m in the car. Where else am I going to look?”

“Out the window.”

“Nothing to see.”

I was in the middle. Felt like a toy. Two kids fighting over it.

“Both of you. Quiet?”

One looked at me. One looked at me.

“I can be quiet,” Luca said.

“I can’t,” Rocco said.

“Majority rules.”

“You’re three people in one,” Rocco said. “He always agrees with you. So you’re three. I’m one. I always lose.”

“Good.”

His jaw went tight. The thing he did when he was mad.

But he didn’t yell.

Just looked out the window.

The city went by.

I thought about something. Last time, on this same road, Rocco asked me a question. *Did Luca make it to this room?*

He didn’t ask this time.

Doesn’t care? Or already knows?

Or-

Scared to know?
