Six Rigged Reviews for Your Assistant? Congrats, You Lost Your Fiancée Chapter 08

After the welcome dinner, I lay in my childhood room at Grandma Eleanor’s house.

She brought me coffee, an electrolyte drink, and the same simple hangover remedy she had made

when I was young.

“Drink this, sweetheart. You won’t wake up with a headache.”

The silver in her hair made tears sting my eyes.

I had spent years waiting up to care for Nolan after his late nights, but no one had cared for me this

way.

“Mom and Dad wanted me to be happy,” I said. “Instead, I chose the path that hurt me most.”

My voice broke.

“I stayed away from you for Nolan. I should have come home years ago.”

Grandma sat beside me and rubbed my back.

“You deserved better. Let the past remain in the past.”

“I never blamed you.”

Although I refused to return to Seattle, Grandma had quietly supported Nolan’s company for my

sake.

Ellis Capital supplied financing, introductions, and contracts that helped Vance Innovations expand with remarkable speed.

Whenever Nolan celebrated a new project, I had believed his success came entirely from his own

ability.

Grandma had never demanded credit because helping him had been another way of protecting me.

Now there was no reason for her to remain silent or generous.

Grandma’s voice became firm.

“I helped that man because you loved him. If he chose to hurt you, my support ends now.”

“His company no longer deserves to stand on what our family gave it.”

Age had not diminished her authority.

For the first time, I allowed myself to grieve without hiding the pain.

Nolan’s betrayal had shown me who he truly was.

He had never deserved the devotion I gave him.

Grandma acted faster than I expected.

Within days, an unsigned letter appeared on Nolan’s desk.

Several of his major projects were suspended after financing and commercial partnerships

disappeared.

Banks delayed new credit, two strategic partners canceled negotiations, and a board meeting was

called without warning.

The network supporting his rapid growth was vanishing piece by piece.

The letter was short, but its contents made his hands shake.

Sloane was the secret daughter of his uncle, Robert Vance.

Years earlier, Nolan had helped his father seize control of Robert’s company. During the family conflict, Sloane’s mother fell down a staircase and died.

Sloane had entered Nolan’s life to isolate him, destroy his relationship, and eventually ruin his

company.

Once he had nothing left, she planned to reveal the truth and leave him alone with it.

Nolan nearly laughed.

He had investigated Sloane before hiring her.

Her records described a poor childhood, and she had spent years appearing obedient, affectionate,

and undemanding.

How could she be Robert’s daughter?

For one foolish moment, he hoped I had sent the letter.

At least that would mean I still cared what happened to him.

The thought made him smile.

He read the unsigned pages again, searching for a phrase that sounded like me.

The careful wording revealed nothing, but desperation let him imagine my concern where none

existed.

Then someone knocked, and Connor hurried inside.

“Mr. Vance, we found something.”

He placed a file on the desk.

“We were tracing Ms. Ellis’s travel, but the search also uncovered information about Sloane.”
