Nolan’s phone rang, pulling me from my memories.

Five seconds later, he seized my wrist.

“This has nothing to do with Sloane. I made the decision, so why are you harassing her?”

His voice turned hard.

“You’re going to apologize.”

I looked down at his fingers digging into my skin and swallowed the pain in my throat.

“I didn’t do anything, and I won’t apologize.”

“We are finished. This condo belonged to my parents, and you have twenty-four hours to move out.”

“I’ll also explain the breakup to your mother myself.”

I removed my engagement ring and held it out.

Panic flickered in his eyes, but before he could speak, Sloane called again.

Nolan tugged at his tie and glanced at the screen.

When he looked back at me, the love had vanished from his face.

“Sloane is alone and frightened. I need to check on her.

“We’ll talk when I get back.”

He ended the call, shoved my hand away, and hurried out.

I stumbled and struck my head against the corner of a cabinet. Even when I cried out, he did not look back.

Like every other day in recent years, I came second to Sloane.

I was tired of it.

The next morning, I planned to visit Nolan’s mother and explain everything.

My parents had died young, and Margaret Vance had treated me with genuine kindness since my college years in Briarhaven.

Now that Nolan and I had no future, I owed her a proper goodbye.

I had barely stepped outside and had not yet entered my rideshare when a motorcycle hit me.

When I woke, I was in a bed at St. Catherine Medical Center.

Tessa sat beside me.

Half an hour later, Nolan arrived with Sloane behind him.

A nurse had used my phone to call him.

The impact had left bruises across my side, and the bandage around my lower leg pulled whenever I moved.

Tessa had already spoken to the police and requested security footage from the street.

Tessa gave them a cold smile.

“How generous. The CEO came to visit his former fiancée and brought his executive assistant along.”

Nolan ignored her and bent over my bed.

“Maren, are you all right? How did this happen?”

“I needed a few stitches in my leg. I’ll live.”

I moved away from the hand he automatically reached toward me.

He withdrew it, looking briefly ashamed.

“This was my fault. I shouldn’t have upset you and made you walk around distracted.”

“It had nothing to do with you. We had already broken up.”

His face darkened.

“We were together for eight years and almost married. You can’t throw that away because of one joke.”

“If we stay together, when exactly will we marry?”

Nolan glanced at Sloane, then back at me.

“We agreed to wait until your proposal won. Next year, I’ll review it personally and make sure you pass.”

I smiled faintly and looked past him.

“Next year? What if she still refuses to let you marry me?

“What if she becomes pregnant with your child?”

His hesitation answered more clearly than words. Even after eight years, he still checked Sloane’s reaction before offering me another promise.

Sloane’s eyes immediately filled with tears.

“Maren, Mr. Vance and I are only coworkers. We happened to be at a client meeting together when the hospital called.”

“If you don’t believe me, I’ll prove it.”

Before anyone could react, she turned and rushed toward the wall as if she intended to slam her head into it.

I had not expected such a performance.
