“Indy, I’m sorry. Can we go back to how we were?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I didn’t know if Mira had truly come to her senses, or if, after Lowell turned on her and she lost both a potential romance and a friendship, she finally understood what I had gone through.

But either way, we could never go back.

After that, my story with both of them finally came to an end.

I no longer had to guess about their relationship. I no longer had to torture myself over and over.

Life slowly quieted down.

I began to pour my focus back into my work.

The Chicago project had been a huge success, and the client was thrilled.

The company gave me a bonus, one much larger than I had expected.

After the debrief meeting, my manager smiled at me.

“The Chicago branch has a supervisor position opening up. Indigo, are you interested?”

I froze for a moment, unable to process it.

“It’s not immediate. The decision won’t be made for a few months,” my manager said, waving a hand. “Just think about it. There’s no rush for an answer.”

Being recognized at work made me feel grounded for the first time in a long time.

When I left the office, it was already dark.

I walked out of the building and found Ethan waiting by the flower bed outside, holding two drinks.

When he saw me, he held one up and gave it a little shake.

“Congratulations on closing out our project, and congratulations on the potential supervisor role.”

“This one’s for you. Strawberry milkshake, less sugar.”

It was my favorite.

I took the drink, a smile spreading across my face.

“You hear things fast.”

He nodded solemnly and opened the car door for me.

“To celebrate, I was wondering if I might have the honor of taking you to dinner tonight.”

He made me laugh, and I got into the passenger seat.
