After I moved, my life became much quieter.

Before, to accommodate Lowell’s schedule, I always pushed my own plans aside.

If there was a chance to travel for work, I didn’t take it.

If there was a training opportunity, I didn’t sign up.

I often turned down gatherings with friends.

Whenever our manager asked who was willing to take on an out-of-town project, I always lowered my head and said nothing.

Eventually, everyone knew.

Indigo always revolved around her boyfriend.

I kept my schedule free so that whenever Lowell needed me, I could be there in an instant.

But now, I only had to think about myself. I didn’t have to arrange my life around him anymore.

That day, our manager asked again during a meeting, “Who’s willing to go on the Chicago project next week?”

The conference room was quiet.

It was right around Valentine’s Day. No one wanted a business trip.

I raised my hand.

“I’ll go.”

My manager glanced at me, a little surprised, then nodded.

“Good. Indigo, you’ll go with Ethan from the next department over. You’ll have someone to look out for you.”

On the day of our flight, Ethan arrived at the airport early.

When I dragged my suitcase over, he took it from my hand smoothly, a smile on his face. “Indigo, this is a rare sight. What made you willing to travel for work? Don’t have to keep your boyfriend company?”

Ethan was two years younger than me. We’d met in college, and later, he got into the company through my recommendation.

Although we weren’t in the same department, we had always been close.

He was always smiling when he saw me. Sometimes he’d bring me coffee; other times he’d pass my desk and leave a box of strawberries.

I answered him directly.

“We broke up.”

After saying that, I walked toward the terminal.

I didn’t notice that Ethan had stopped in his tracks for several seconds, watching me go.
