She Took My Hearing, He Took Her Side Chapter 06

She Took My Hearing, He Took Her Side Chapter 06

The hospital evaluation took all day.

The doctor studied the scans for a long time. His expression was grim,

“You’re way past the optimal treatment window. A full recovery isn’t likely.”

I nodded.

I’d known that for a long time.

But then he leaned forward. “Your auditory nerve is still responding. With a second-stage cochlear procedure and neural stimulation therapy, you could regain some directional hearing and sound

recognition.”

I stopped breathing.

Adrian was next to me, repeating every word slowly so I could read his lips.

Making sure I caught all of it.

“There’s still a chance.”

The moment he said it, my right ear flared with pain.

But for the first time, the pain wasn’t the only thing I felt.

I thought of eight years ago.

Graham had paid for this exact surgery once.

He’d brought me right to the edge of a cure.

And then he slammed the door shut himself.

Told me there was nothing on the other side.

He lied.

Behind it was the life I was supposed to have.

Adrian slid a treatment agreement across the desk.

“The foundation will cover the cost upfront. You can work with us later to offset it, or pay it back over time. Whatever is easiest.”

I looked up at him.

“Why are you helping me?”

He was silent for a moment.

“I read your application.

“You wrote one sentence at the end.”

My heart skipped a beat.

He said, “You wrote, ‘If I still have a chance, I want to hear my own voice again.””

I looked down.

My fingertips tightened around the edge of the paper.

I couldn’t remember the last time I’d heard my own voice clearly.

Through the hearing aid, everything came through shattered and warped.

Voices reached me as if they were coming through water.

Laughter scraped like broken glass.

Graham once promised he’d help me learn to live in that world.

Instead, he was the reason I stayed broken.

I signed my name.

“I’ll do the treatment.”

Adrian nodded.

“We’ll start right away.”

Half a world away, Sienna’s recital went ahead as planned.

She’d hyped it to the press as her “rebirth.” It fell apart less than ten minutes in.

The main projector behind the stage abruptly cut to old surveillance footage.

The footage was from backstage, eight years ago.

It showed Sienna slipping my custom in-ear monitor into her bag.

Then, cutting to another angle, she handed me the tampered spare.

The entire hall erupted into chaos.

The second clip was a leaked audio recording from the press conference backstage.

Sienna’s voice, sobbing on the tape: “But that money was supposed to be for her surgery, wasn’t it?”

Graham was silent..

He didn’t deny it.

Sienna stood up from the piano bench.

She went ghost-white.

She stared in horror down at the front row.

Graham was sitting there.

She waited for him to stand up. To throw himself between her and the fallout, just like he always did.

But this time, Graham didn’t move.

He just watched the screen.

He watched the footage of me putting on that monitor and falling from the riser.

He watched blood pour from my ear.

He watched himself grab Sienna’s bag before anyone could look inside.

The blood drained from his face, leaving him staring at his own complicity.

The recital was dead in the water.

Sponsors pulled out on the spot.

The Music Association announced they were reopening the investigation.

Her triumphant comeback had turned into a very public execution.

Adrian showed me the trending headlines the next morning,

I glanced at it.

Then I handed the tablet back.

“You don’t ever need to show me updates on them again.”

Adrian asked, “Don’t you want to see how it ends for them?”

I shook my head.

“Knowing won’t heal my ear.”

He studied me for a moment.

All he said was, “Then let’s focus on getting you better.”

I leaned back against the hospital pillows.

The sky outside the window stretched wide and blue.

For the first time, the world felt enormous.

Big enough that it didn’t begin and end with Graham and Sienna.
