She Stole My Husband—And Inherited His $540,000 Bill Chapter 09

Men like Adam don’t confront. They investigate.

He didn’t scream at Vanessa. He smiled through dinner, kissed her goodnight-and the next morning, according to Lily’s flawless intelligence network (she’d befriended Vanessa’s manicurist, a strategic masterpiece), he collected a hairbrush and a used water glass and drove to a lab.

Prenatal paternity testing takes about a week.

It was, by all accounts, a very quiet week in the Cole household. Adam was pleasant. Attentive, even. He

brought home flowers. Vanessa posted them with the caption “he’s finally learning?”.

Babe. He was gathering evidence.

The results came on a Thursday.

Probability of paternity: 0%.

Lily called me from the hallway outside the apartment, whispering like a golf commentator, because Diane had summoned her over for “family support” and Lily had correctly deduced that meant “front-row seats.”

“He printed it out,” she breathed. “He PRINTED the results. Who prints things? He put it on the kitchen table under her coffee mug and just… waited.”

Through the phone, faintly, I could hear it: Vanessa’s voice climbing register by register. It’s a mistake. Labs make mistakes. How DARE you test me like a criminal-

And then Adam’s voice, and I’ll admit, it made the hair on my arms stand up, because I’d never heard him like that in five years of marriage. Flat. Empty. Almost amused.

“Twenty-two weeks, Vanessa. I was in Denver. Whose is it?”

Silence.

“Whose. Is. It.”

And because Vanessa was, above all, a creature who bit when cornered, she told him. Not confessed-told him, flung it like acid:

“Marcus Hale’s! Yes! Marcus! Because HE has actual money, Adam-not a leased Porsche and a wife’s allowance! You think I came back for YOU? I came back because you looked rich. The hotel, the penthouse, the diamonds-and it was ALL HERS! You’re not a rich man, you’re a rich woman’s DOG who slipped his leash, and I bet everything on a DOG!”

Patricia Hale, who sat on two museum boards and one hospital foundation, and who once ended a rival’s entire social existence over a seating chart.

Lily’s whisper crackled with awe. “Elena. Elena, she’s been seeing Marcus the whole time. Since before the vow renewal. Adam was the backup plan. YOU were funding the backup plan’s costume.”

I sat there with my hand on my belly, and I want to be honest about my emotional state: I felt no grief. I felt the way you feel watching a nature documentary when the antelope turns out to also be a crocodile.

Vanessa had never wanted Adam. She’d wanted whichever man’s number was bigger, and she’d juggled two of them-one who was secretly broke, and one who was secretly married to Patricia Hale.

“What’s Adam doing now?” I asked.

“He left. He just-took his coat and left. He didn’t even yell. Diane is yelling enough for six people. Vanessa’s packing.” A pause. “Elena, where do you think Adam went?”

I knew exactly where he went. It’s what he would do; it’s the only move a bankrupt man with a grudge has left.

He wasn’t going to fight Vanessa.

He was going to forward the paternity results to Patricia Hale.

And Patricia Hale did not do lawn arguments and lemonade audiences.

Patricia Hale did scorched earth.
