The Discord server had several thousand members, and the unread count climbed past ninety-nine every few seconds.

By then, Brielle had wiped away her tears. Her voice remained stubborn.

“I only wanted to be brave once. Is that really wrong?”

“Could we please not let this ruin our friendship?”

Keira started to answer for me, but I stopped her.

“You and I aren’t friends anymore,” I told Brielle.

She ran out with red eyes and did not return until long after the residence hall’s quiet hours had begun. When the suite finally went dark, Adrian replied.

Adrian: [Why would you think I mistook her for you?]

I stared at the screen.

Adrian: [When Brielle started talking about things she knew about me, I did wonder whether you had come early to surprise me.]

As I read his words, my anger and hurt slowly receded. In their place came a shame I could barely name.
