She Said She’d Watch My Man. Then She Stole Him Chapter 04

On the way home, I booked the earliest flight out.

When I opened the door, the apartment was dark. Quiet.

Dorian wasn’t back yet.

I only packed the important documents.

I left everything he’d bought me.

I took off the engagement ring and set it on the nightstand.

I went through my things.

One last thing—the Evil Eye charm my mother had left me.

I opened the drawer. It wasn’t there.

My heart started pounding.

I checked the lower drawer. The closet.

Nothing.

I searched Dorian’s study. Still nothing.

I sat down, hands shaking.

I called him.

The charm was important.

I got sick in high school. My mother found it for me.

Strangely, my illness went away.

It was the only thing she left me.

The phone rang.

“Mira,” his voice came through.

“Dorian, did you see my charm? Did you put it somewhere?”

Rain crackled on his end.

He paused. “It’s with me.”

I let out a breath. “Then bring it back. Be careful, it’s from my—”

“Mira.” He cut me off. “I gave it to Sera.”

My mind went blank.

“She’s been having nightmares. Can’t sleep.”

“You said it was powerful. I couldn’t stand seeing her like that. I let her wear it.”

Tears fell.

“That was from my mother…”

When I was sick and barely conscious, she put it around my neck.

She told me, “This charm has your name on it. It’s only for you.”

“No one else can use it. Or it won’t work.”

Only me.

I showed it to Sera in high school.

She knew.

I showed Dorian when we moved in together.

I wouldn’t even let him touch it.

It was like my mother was still here. Watching over me.

“You know it was only for—”

“I know.”

He remembered.

Then I heard movement.

Sera’s voice came through, shaky.

“Mira, I’m sorry. I’ll bring it back.”

“Don’t be mad. I don’t need it. I can handle the nightmares.”

The wind on her end got louder.

Then a soft crack—something hit the ground.

It was light. And heavy. Right on my chest.

Three seconds of silence.

Then Sera cried, “Sorry, sorry, I dropped it. I didn’t mean to.”

I couldn’t hear anything else.

The phone slipped from my hand.

My body gave out. I slid off the couch.

The room was so quiet.

I could hear the rain outside, tapping against the window.

“Mira—”

Both their voices came from the phone. Calling me.

I felt like I was drowning in deep water. Ringing in my ears.

I couldn’t breathe.

I buried my face in my knees.

I didn’t scream. I didn’t throw things.

I just lost all my strength.

The last thing my mother left me—was gone.

There was nothing left for me here.

I stood up. I looked around the room one last time.

Then I opened the door and left.

I carried my suitcase out of the home I’d lived in for seven years.
