She Played Weak for Sympathy, So I Walked Away Without Looking Back Chapter 05

Even through the screen, I could feel Julian’s panic.

Julian: [Natalie, where are you? Camille and I are at the house, and you’re nowhere to be found.)

Julian: [You won’t answer your phone either. What the hell are you upset about now?]

Julian: [Where did the divorce decree on my desk come from? When did we get divorced? Explain this to me.]

Julian: [Natalie, what are you trying to do?]

I read every message calmly.

I could picture him at home, furious and frantic.

In the past, seeing him panic over me would have made me ecstatic.

Now I felt nothing.

After landing in Savannah, I went straight to an apartment a friend had found for me.

I had barely finished moving in when my phone began buzzing again.

Julian was calling.

I hesitated, then answered.

He immediately launched into a tirade.

“Natalie, what the hell are you doing? Even if you’re jealous, you can’t pull something this ridiculous. Come

home right now. Camille wants you to cook for her…”

I cut him off coldly.

“I’m not jealous. We’re divorced.”

“You can verify it with the court. We’re legally divorced.”

Silence fell on the other end.

Julian took a deep breath.

“Natalie, you’re still pregnant. Stop this. Tell me where you are, and I’ll come get you.”

Even now, he did not believe I could actually divorce him.

Perhaps in his mind, I would always be the Natalie who depended on him and could not manage anything

without fi.

“Julian, the baby is gone. The hospital dischatge papers are in the drawer. If you still don’t believe me, check

our insurance account.”

Then I ended the call.

Back at the house, Julian stood frozen for a long time.

Camille eventually approached him and spoke softly.

“Julian, is Natalie still angry with you?”

Julian rubbed his forehead, his voice edged with irritation.

“I don’t know what’s gotten into her. She’s pregnant, yet she’s making up something like that about the baby.”

A calculating glint flashed in Camille’s eyes, but her voice remained gentle.

“It’s okay. I’ll stay here and wait for her with you.”

She rested a hand on Julian’s arm, her gaze suggestive.

“You look exhausted. Why don’t I give you a massage and help you relax?”

Julian’s body stiffened.

In the past, he might not have thought anything of it.

But with Natalie gone, Camille’s touch suddenly made him deeply uncomfortable.

He coldly pulled his arm away.

“You should go back to your place.”

Camille’s expression changed instantly.

“What did you say?”

Julian remained impassive, and a hint of impatience entered his eyes.

“Natalie has walked out. It wouldn’t be appropriate for you to stay here alone with me. People could get the wrong idea,”

“Go home and upgrade your locks. It won’t cost much. I’m not driving you.”

Camille’s lips trembled.

“You’re sending me away But I’m really not safe by myself…”

“That’s enough

Julian had already taken out his phone to contact his assistant.

“Go home. I have things to take care of.”

“You…”

Camille clenched her fists. She was trapped between staying and leaving, and the resentment in her eyes was

almost impossible to hide.

In the end, she forced herself to appear fragile.

“All right. I’ll go home. Try not to worry too much…”

She turned and deliberately slowed her steps as she headed for the door.

In the past, Julian would have followed the moment she acted hurt or tried to charm him.

This time, he did not move.

Her eyes reddened, and she finally hurried out in humiliation.

Julian called his assistant.

“Find out where Natalie is. Now.”

The assistant responded quickly.

“Mr. Mercer, your wife is in Savannah.”

“Savannah?”

Julian frowned.

“What is she doing all the way there? Has she lost her mind?”

Then something suddenly occurred to him, and his voice began to shake.

“Check our insurance account right now. Find out whether Natalie has received any recent medical care.”

The assistant found the information just as quickly as before. This time, however, he sounded unusually

cautious.

“Mr. Mercer, your wife’s most recent hospital visit was for a D&E after a miscarriage.”

The words hit Julian like a blow, and his mind went blank.

“She really lost the baby?”

“There’s no doubt about it. I confirmed the insurance claim and spoke to one of the doctors at the hospital. He said…”

The assistant hesitated, afraid to continue.

“Stop stalling and tell me!”

Julian snapped.

“The doctor said your wife called the ambulance herself. By the time she arrived, she was deathly pale and ice-cold. She was already in a weakened state, and she nearly died during the procedure…”

Julian could barely hear anything after that.

His hand tightened around the phone until his knuckles turned white.

A long time passed before he managed to speak, his voice hoarse.

“I understand.”

Natalie had been telling the truth.

That day, Julian had been in such a hurry to get to Camille that he had shoved Natalie aside.

He had heard a dull thud, but he had not stopped to check on her.\

He had gone straight to Camille.

Natalie called him afterward, sobbing so desperately that the sound had torn at him. She told him she was

losing the baby and begged him to take her to the hospital.

What had he said to her?

He had listened to Camille and decided Natalie was lying about the miscarriage. Then he had spoken to her with nothing but contempt and told her to stop pulling stunts.

That had been their baby-the child Natalie had carried for four months.
