A flicker of panic crossed Savannah’s face. 

Before she could lie, my coworkers shouted from the crowd. 

“Yes, she did. She said your wife and son were dead.” 

“She said you gave her everything you owned.” 

“Savannah, you are pathetic. You spent two months working with us just to set this up, didn’t you?” 

Charles’s face reddened with anger as he yelled at Savannah, “Are you insane? What did I tell you? Did you just ignore everything I said?” 

Savannah flinched, her confidence crumbling. She grabbed his wrist, looking pitiful. “I did it for you. I couldn’t stand you destroying yourself. That’s why I…” 

Charles yanked his hand away. “Enough!” 

His veins bulged; he was furious, but also trying to shut her up 

before she said too much. 

I was too angry to notice. 

I pointed at the actors playing his parents. “Did you know? 

They’re not actually his parents!” 

Savannah’s eyes went wide as she stared at them. 

“Charles’s mother died four years ago,” I said. “His father has dementia. He lives in a care facility.” 

Savannah looked sick. 

I turned to Charles, my hatred blazing. “I paid for your mother’s treatment. 250,000. I borrowed 100,000. I cleaned 

her, fed her, changed her.” 

“I took care of your father every time he was sick. I mortgaged 

our houses to save your business, and even my parents‘ 

retirement.” 

“And what did you do? You had money for your mistress, but 

not for your own dying mother?” 

“How could you be so heartless, Charles?” 

The tears came faster now, and I couldn’t stop them. 

Charles shook his head slowly, his eyes red too, as if he didn’t 

want to accept what I was saying. 

“I never forgot what you did for me. When Mom was sick, the company really had nothing. I didn’t lie to you about that.” 

He was still lying. 

The crowd shouted him down. 

“Bullshit!” 

“Savannah told us you have an overseas company! You 

stashed all your money with her! She said she had more than 

she could ever spend!” 

“You’re busted, you liar!” 

Charles dropped his head and sighed. When he looked up, his 

eyes were wet. 

“Fine. I cheated. I won’t deny that. And yes, I have feelings for 

her.” 

“The overseas company only started making money last year, it’s a partnership, and yes, I put money in her name.” 

“But Jennifer, please believe me, you are still the one I love 

most.” 

“This wedding… I know I hurt you. But Savannah has cancer. 

She only has about a year to live.” 

“She wanted a wedding. I didn’t want her to die with regrets.”
