She Got 41 Tries, I Got Zero Seconds. So I Gave Myself a One-Way Ticket Out Chapter 07

Tamsin’s parents stared at Auden in shock.

“You don’t know?”

Auden looked just as lost as he stared back at them. “Know what?”

“Tam left with Global Relief Doctors. She didn’t tell you?”

Auden shot to his feet. “What?”

Anger surged through him first. No matter how mad she was, no matter how badly she wanted to throw a tantrum, she had no right to make a decision this big without saying a word to him.

Did she still see him as her boyfriend at all?

But before the anger could settle, fear rushed in after it.

Anyone could imagine how dangerous a Global Relief Doctors field mission would be.

He was furious at Tamsin for being so reckless, for making a choice like this without discussing it with him.

Then he turned that anger on her parents too.

“How could you let her go?” His voice tightened. “It’s too dangerous.”

“When did she leave?”

“This afternoon.”

Before they could finish speaking, Auden was already out the door.

He raced toward the airport. There should still be time. He had to stop Tamsin. He could not let her go somewhere that dangerous. If something happened to her, what was he supposed to do?

By the time Auden sped into the airport parking lane, he was told Tamsin’s flight had taken off five minutes

ľ ago.

Five minutes.

Auden clenched his fist and swung at the empty air.

He had missed her by five minutes.

If he had driven faster. If he had asked her parents sooner instead of making small talk for so long. If he had

not wasted time on that ridiculous rehearsal with Blythe.

He would have made it.

He would have stopped Tamsiu.

But he did not give himself time to drown in regret. Every minute he delayed meant Tamsin was one minute

deeper into danger on the other side of the world.

He got back into the car and drove home.

Passport. Wallet. That was all he grabbed before heading for the door.

He did not even pack clothes. The second he thought about Tamsin being somewhere dangerous, he could

not wait. Not for one more minute.

But when he pulled the door open, someone was standing outside.

Blythe.

She stepped forward and threw her arms around his waist. “I won’t let you go. It’s too dangerous.”

“Let go.” Auden pulled at her hands. “That’s exactly why I have to go. If something happens to Tamsin, what am I supposed to do?”

Blythe held on tighter and raised her voice. “Auds, what am I supposed to do if something happens to you?”

Auden froze while trying to pry her hands off.

After a moment, he snapped, “Blythe, how can you say that?”

Blythe released him and took two steps back, tears sliding down her face. “Why can’t I?”

“All you ever do is run after Tamsin,” Blythe said. “Do you even see me standing right in front of you?”

“What makes her so special? I’m not less beautiful than she is. I’m not less worthy. And unlike her, I

wouldn’t walk away from you just to prove a point.”

Her eyes reddened. “I would love you better, Auds. Why can’t you understand that?”

Auden stared at her coldly. “Blythe, you’re Tamsin’s best friend. For Tam’s sake, I can pretend I didn’t hear

what you just said, Have some respect for yourself. I love Tamsin. Only Tamsin. Move.”

Blythe planted herself in the doorway. “No. I heard you on the phone. Tamsin broke up with you. She doesn’t

want you anymore. I won’t let you go after her. You’re just in withdrawal right now. Once you get through it,

you’ll realize I’m so much better than Tamsin. You’ll fall in love with me.”

Auden did not want to hear another word of her nonsense.

“Fine,” he said. “I won’t go. Let’s talk inside.”

The second Blythe stepped one foot into the apartment, Auden stood behind her, shoved her inside, and

slammed the door shut.

Then he drove straight back toward the airport.
