Tamsin really had been spoiled by him. In the past, throwing a little attitude was one thing. But now she actually dared to say they were done?

Blythe held up her hand, showing Auden the ring on her finger.

Auden’s mouth curved. “It looks good.”

Blythe pressed, “Does it look better on me, or would it look better on Tamsin?”

Auden felt something twist uncomfortably in his chest.

She said Tamsin’s full name, sounding almost deliberately distant. And now she wanted to compare who looked better wearing the ring?

He had already told her this was an engagement ring. He was buying it for Tamsin.

Why would Blythe even make that comparison? Was that something friends compared?

Auden felt uneasy, but then wondered if he was being too sensitive.

Blythe ran her fingers over the ring. “When is Tamsin coming?”

Again, Blythe used her full name.

Weren’t they best friends? The kind who told each other everything? In front of Tamsin, Blythe always called her babe or Tam like they were sisters.

So why did she sound almost hostile now?

Auden could not figure it out, so he answered honestly. “She’s throwing a tantrum again. I’m letting her cool off. By the time we go back, she’ll probably be over it.”

Blythe paused, watching him carefully. “That annoying?”

Auden nodded. “Yeah. A little.”

“Then have you ever thought about getting a girlfriend who doesn’t throw tantrums?”

Auden stared at her. “What?”

Blythe arched a brow. “I don’t throw tantrams. Want to try dating me instead?”

Auden frowned at her.

How could she say something like that? She was Tamsin’s best friend, the person Tamsin trusted with

everything. And he was Tamsin’s boyfriend.

That was not something she could joke about.

Seeing his face darken, Blythe let out a light laugh, deliberately hiding the disappointment in her eyes. “Relax. I was kidding. Look how tense you got. Is it that serious?”

When Auden heard it was only a joke, he let out a breath.

Blythe took off the ring and handed it back to him. The moment Auden took it, she held out her ring finger.

“Auds, get down on one knee and put it on me.”

Auden’s brows pulled together again.

What was wrong with Blythe today? Why did she keep saying and doing strange things?

Auden stood still. His face cooled little by little.

“Aren’t you planning to propose to Tamsin?” Blythe said. “Don’t you want to rehearse first? Do you even know which knee to kneel on?”

She pulled her hand back. “I was doing you a favor. After all the time and effort you spent picking clothes for me yesterday, and after you carried me to urgent care, I thought I’d be your free stand-in. But if you don’t

appreciate it, forget it.”

“Wait.”

Auden stopped her before he could think.

It seemed to make some sense.

A proposal was important. If he messed it up when the moment came, it would be awkward. Embarrassing,

even.

Auden stepped back and got down on one knee.

“The other knee.”

The second he bent his leg, Blythe corrected him.

Auden switched knees, held up the ring, and looked up at Blythe.

But Blythe only crossed her arms and stared down at him in silence.

After a moment, she said, “Aren’t you going to say something?”
