She Called Me A Kept Woman, I Kept The Family Fortune Chapter 08

Richard was beside himself with panic.

But I’d forbidden him from revealing my real identity, so all he could do was stand there and worry.

“I’ve already had the divorce papers prepared. All you have to do is sign.”

The stack of documents on the table only confirmed what I’d suspected.

Madison had picked a fight with me over the painting, and Ethan had answered by placing an

uncapped bid for her.

everything that had happened tonight crossed a line I could not accept.

I signed my name without hesitation and handed the papers back.

Ethan noticed the faint smile on my face and frowned.

“Evelyn, what are you smiling about?”

I looked up at him, cold and steady.

“What? I’m not allowed to be happy?”

“Someone’s about to have a very bad night. Can’t I celebrate a little early?”

Ethan’s face reddened at my answer.

“Fine. I’d love to see how you’re planning to make me regret this.”

He glared at me, then signed his own name on the divorce agreement.

Just like that, my three-year marriage was over.

I didn’t know why, but watching Ethan sign his name didn’t hurt at all.

If anything, I felt lighter than I had in years.

Once the papers were signed, Ethan glared at me again.

“We’re done signing. Now keep the promise you made earlier.”

“Either prove you have fifteen million dollars, or I’m calling the police and having you thrown out.”

I glanced at him and let out a long breath.

“I’ve never seen anyone so eager to dig his own grave.”

“Since you’re dying to see what fifteen million dollars looks like, I’ll give you what you want.”

I pulled out my phone in front of everyone.

“Get whoever’s in charge of tonight’s auction in here. Tell him Evelyn Hart wants to see him.”

I hung up, looked at the clock on the wall, and started counting silently.

I hadn’t even reached ten when hurried footsteps sounded outside the ballroom.

Whispers rippled through the crowd as everyone tried to guess who was really behind the charity

auction.

A man around my age walked into the room.

The instant he appeared, jaws dropped across the ballroom. Everyone stared at me in shock.

“Julian Sterling!”

“You’re telling me Julian Sterling, Wall Street royalty is the man behind tonight’s auction?”

Even Ethan, arrogant as he was, looked stunned.

He straightened his jacket and hurried over to greet him.

“Mr. Sterling, what brings you here?”

Julian didn’t even look at him. He walked straight past Ethan and stopped in front of me.

The respect in his posture was impossible to miss.

“Ms. Hart. What do you need?”

I gave him a small nod, my voice perfectly calm.

“Have the bank send proof of fifteen million dollars in available funds. I’m buying a painting.”

Julian, one of New York’s most powerful young financiers, didn’t hesitate.

“Of course, Ms. Hart. I’ll have the bank send verification immediately.”

The ballroom erupted.

“What is going on? How does she know Julian Sterling?”

“I have no idea. Why is someone like him treating her with that much respect?”

“If everything she said earlier was true, Caldwell Holdings could be in serious trouble…”

I ignored the whispers and walked over to Ethan, a faint smile on my lips.

“Chairman Caldwell, I believe it’s your turn to put on a show.”
