Seventeen Times She Came, Once I Stopped Caring Chapter 08

When Megan’s story started trending, I was having dinner with Owen, planning our honeymoon.

We’d picked a few places.

We’d known each other since we were four, separated at sixteen when he went abroad. We lost touch.

But Owen came back two years ago and watched me stumble sixteen times without ever crossing the line.

He just sent me messages and had his assistant take care of me when I was at my lowest.

We didn’t miss our chance.

I was flipping through a travel guide, overwhelmed. “I want to go everywhere, but we can’t do it all at once.”

He said, “We’ll go anywhere. Pick what you want and I’ll plan it.”

I thought for a moment. “I want mountains, lakes—the whole scenic thing. Let’s start with a road trip across the country, then hit the rest of the world.”

He smiled softly. “Whatever you want.”

He’d never forgotten what I liked. He made detailed itineraries, and I could just follow him like a puppy.

I made the right choice.

Then the notifications popped up.

I saw Megan’s scam trending everywhere.

Her real background was laid bare. The whole internet was dragging her.

[I knew it was a scam. That face looked evil—and she’s had plastic surgery too.]

[That photo she used is a celebrity’s son. She photoshopped it. She’s getting sued for image rights.]

[Ethan is such a fool for falling for her.]

[Poor Leah—wedding after wedding ruined by that woman.]

[Update for you all: Leah already got married. It was gorgeous. Check out the wedding video.]

Megan had used a celebrity kid’s photo, and the star was suing for infringement.

Someone posted a video of Megan in a hospital gown, barefoot, screaming outside Ethan’s office.

No one cared.

Then I was tagged.

It was Ethan.

He was on a livestream, pale as death.

“Leah, are you watching?”

“I didn’t know Megan was lying. I’m so sorry. I hurt you.”

He dropped to one knee and held out a diamond ring, eyes red.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me right away. I’m just begging you—give us one more chance, for the ten years we had.”

“I’ll give you the wedding you deserve. I’ll walk on broken glass to get to you, if that’s what it takes.”

I didn’t reply.

What was there to say?

But the internet answered for me.

[Save it, Ethan. Her husband is Owen Brooks.]

[You really want to mess with the Brooks family?]

[And by the way—their wedding was gorgeous.]

I smiled at the memory.

Owen came over, a little jealous, and turned off the stream.

“Babe, I need to go public. Or he’ll keep trying.”

I laughed and took his hand. “Okay.”
