Separated Rooms for Three Years, He Panicked After I Moved Out Chapter 26

I went to the window and peered through a gap in the curtains.

Briar was standing by the flowerbed downstairs, looking up at my apartment.

He stood there for a long time.

Eventually, he took a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and lit one.

After a few minutes, he stubbed it out and turned to leave.

I let the curtain fall and went back to bed.

But I couldn’t sleep.

I thought that after that, Briar would finally give up.

But I had underestimated his stubbornness.

In the days that followed, he began to insert himself into my life in every way he could think of.

First came the deliveries.

Every morning, a courier would leave something at my door.

The first day, it was a bouquet of white roses. The card read, “I’m sorry.”

The second day, a box of macarons. The card: “I remember you like sweets.”

The third day, a new novel. The card: “You said you wanted to read this author’s latest.”

I didn’t accept any of it. I sent everything back.

But he kept sending things.

The fourth day, it was a scarf. The fifth, a scented candle. The sixth, a travel brochure for a trip to Iceland to see the northern lights.

When I saw the aurora brochure, I paused.

I had only mentioned it once, casually, in the car on the way to our divorce. He had actually remembered.

But I wasn’t moved.

Remembering one small detail didn’t mean anything.

I sent the brochure back, too.
