Separated Rooms for Three Years, He Panicked After I Moved Out Chapter 13

After I got home, I put away the last of my things, took a long shower, and changed into comfortable loungewear.

Then I sat on the sofa, picked up my phone, and dialed.

It rang three times before she picked up.

“Marceline?”

It was my mother’s voice, laced with surprise.

“Why are you calling at this hour? Is something wrong?”

“Mom, Briar and I are divorced.”

The line went silent for five full seconds.

“What did you say?”

“We finalized the paperwork today.”

My mother’s voice rose, sharp with disbelief.

“Marceline, how could you not discuss something this big with us first? Does your father know? You—”

“Mom, just listen to me,” I interrupted, my voice calm and steady.

“This marriage was a business deal from the start. Your company’s problems are solved, and his family’s lawsuit is over. There was no reason for it to continue.”

“For three years, he never once treated me like his wife.”

“Instead of dragging it out, it was better to just end it.”

The other end of the line went quiet again.

I could hear her take a deep breath. The anger in her voice had dissolved, leaving only exhaustion.

“Marceline, were these last three years very hard on you?”

The question made my nose sting.

“It’s okay. It’s all over now.”

“I rented an apartment. I want to live by myself for a while. I’ve never done that before. I want to try.”
