Secret Mission Turned Out to Be Fathering My Bestie’s Baby Chapter 03

He grabbed my phone out of my hand. Then we both heard movement at the door.

Jessica stood there, her lips white, eyes rimmed red.

“Emma… you know, don’t you?”

Her voice trembled with fear.

Nathan moved to support her, shielding her with his body.

“Sweetheart, why did you leave your suite? You didn’t even put on a jacket—you can’t catch a chill right after giving birth. Let’s get you back to the recovery wing, okay?”

Jessica pushed him away, grabbed me, and sobbed through her explanation.

“I’m so sorry, Emma. It’s all my fault. I fell for Nathan, but he loves you. I never wanted to come between you.”

“I was despicable—I got him drunk before your wedding. I wore your clothes, and he thought I was you. That’s how it started.”

“We agreed to forget it. Pretend it never happened. But I got greedy. I kept going back to him. Then I got pregnant and couldn’t bring myself to end it. I’ve been lying to you the whole time.”

“Emma, you should hate me. I don’t deserve to be your ride-or-die.”

She clung to my arm, sinking to her knees, wrapping herself around my legs.

“Emma, the baby is yours too. You’re his godmother. You can hate me all you want, just don’t take it out on him.”

Nathan’s eyes were full of pity. He tried to help her up.

I stepped back. She bumped her nose into my knee—or rather, she threw herself into it.

Blood poured down her face.

“Jessica!”

She pushed Nathan away again and kept crying, begging.

“Emma, please forgive me?”

I stood frozen, my skull ringing.

“Emma. Say something.”

Nathan grabbed my collar, his eyes hard and threatening, like he’d kill me if I said the wrong thing.

“Tell me you’re not mad at her. Tell me you’ll accept this child.”

I let out a bitter laugh, and then my smile vanished.

“Why should I?”

Jessica was sobbing so hard she gagged, blood and tears smeared across her face, still muttering, “I’m sorry.”

Nathan shot me a hateful glare, scooped her up, and carried her out.

She wrapped her arms around his neck. A diamond ring glinted on her ring finger.

She’d told me about it—the “mystery man” who’d proposed to her. Her eyes lit up when she mentioned it, though her voice was sad.

“He proposed, but we both know it’s just pretend. We can never really be together.”

Now that the baby was here, maybe they could.

I swayed on my feet. My head pounded. My stomach twisted with pain.

My phone rang—the city hospital where I’d had tests a few days ago. The sound was shrill, but I didn’t have the energy to answer.

I fumbled for over-the-counter painkillers, swallowed them with sleeping pills.

Maybe when I woke up, this whole nightmare would be over.

Maybe it would be better if I didn’t wake up at all.
