Second Life: The Mafia Wife’s Cold Awakening Chapter 02

Chapter 2 Let’s End This
Mia Potter was originally a maid in our house.
But while I was pregnant, she slipped small doses of abortion pills into my food every day.
By the time I found out, my body was already riddled with toxins.
The doctor said it was a miracle the baby was still hanging on.
I decided to let Mia off the hook and not hold her accountable.
But just as I was about to kick her out, Lucian dragged Liliana inside.
And there it was. The tears. The trembling voice. Liliana grabbed Mia’s hand. “Serafina! You monster! The Vittoris cut her loose—who’s gonna hire her now? You want her dead!”
Then she turned those big, wet eyes on my husband. “Lucian, let me take her. I’ll make sure she’s okay. Better than leaving her to rot on the streets.”
Lucian turned to Liliana and sighed helplessly.
“You’re too soft, you know that?” He said it to her. Then he snapped at me. “Serafina. She’s right. You and the kid are fine. Stop making this a thing. Mia goes with Liliana. End of discussion.”
I could barely believe what I was hearing.
I was carrying his heir. Someone tried to poison us. And I’m the one being dramatic?
Ridiculous. F*cking ridiculous. But back then, I was still blind, still in love with the b*stard. I told myself Liliana was just messing with his head—that he’d snap out of it.
His wife. That’s what I was. So I did what wives do. Understood. Forgave. Swallow it all down and smile. That’s what I told myself.
Until late one night, I passed the study and overheard them talking.
His voice. Dripping honey. “Next time, be smarter about the dosage. Don’t let her catch you again. If she catches you twice, I can’t cover for you.”
Liliana giggled. Clung to his arm.
“I know, baby. Thank you.”
That was it. The exact second my heart turned to stone.
That was the truth I’d been too blind to see. He’d known. The whole time.
We were obstacles. That’s all. Me and the life inside me. He was just waiting for us to die so he could hand my spot over to Liliana. Like we were nothing.
I was the only idiot kept in the dark.
She said, “Mrs. Carvalho, Mr. Carvalho says he’s with Mrs. Rossi right now. As for you, breathing is enough. If you bother him again, he’ll divorce you. What’s more, he’ll make your unborn baby call Mrs. Rossi ‘Mom’! ”
She grew more arrogant by the second, completely missing how dark the Don’s expression was beside me.
She strutted right up to my bed. Sneering. “Mrs. Carvalho. Save the drama. Your little pathetic act? Mr. Carvalho’s not buying.”
She leaned in. “If I tell Mr. Carvalho the truth… that you whored around with this random guy while carrying his kid… don’t you think he’ll tear you to pieces?” She looked so godd*mn proud of herself.
Simply because the Don’s bespoke suit was stained and he was currently wearing plain black casual clothes, she had mistaken him for some random nobody.
Before she could finish, the Don shot to his feet and kicked the chair next to him over.
All the underlings present dropped to their knees in unison.
Mia’s brain finally caught up. She turned. Saw the death in his eyes. All the blood drained from her face.
“Say that again.” His voice was soft. Almost gentle. And absolutely terrifying.
Her legs gave. She just collapsed. Shaking. Couldn’t even beg.
“Throw her to the dogs. Then dump whatever’s left on Lucian’s doorstep. I want to see what trump cards he thinks he’s holding to pull this sh*t with me.”
The bodyguards immediately stepped forward, muffled Mia’s mouth, and dragged her out.
The ward finally fell silent.
The drugs pulled me down. Warm. Heavy. No dreams.
Footsteps woke me. Fast. Hard. Right outside the door.
Before I could turn my head, a pair of rough hands gripped my jaw.
It was Lucian.
He stared at me with a dark, grim look.
“You cold-hearted b*tch. You actually let him kill Mia. Do you have any idea how destroyed Liliana is right now? I must’ve been f*cking blind to marry a snake like you.”
With that, he slapped me hard across the face.
My face was on fire. A thin trickle of blood crawled past my lip.
I wiped my mouth. Looked at him. Dead calm. “Lucian. Divorce. Now.”
I was done. No more games.
I just wanted to get divorced quickly, then make him and Liliana pay with their blood.
He didn’t see that coming. His grip went slack.
Just then, Liliana floated in.
Her eyes were red, tears still streaked her face, and she looked pitiful and fragile.
Lucian dropped me like a hot rock. Rushed to her. Pulled her in like she was made of porcelain. His voice went soft. Sickly sweet. Never heard him use that tone with me. “Baby, what are you doing here? I told you to rest.”
She shook her head. “I was worried. I heard you fighting. It’s all my fault. Maybe… maybe you should just let me go. I’m nothing but trouble.”
Then came the tears. Perfectly timed. She let them fall one by one onto Lucian.
He folded. Held her. Comforted her. Like I wasn’t even in the room.
“Stop it. You know you’re the only one. Once she has the baby, I’ll give him to you to raise and make you my official wife! ”
I dragged my head up. “Official wife? The kid? Open your godd*mn eyes, Lucian. The baby’s dead!” My voice was wrecked.
Lucian frowned impatiently.
“What the hell is wrong with you? Killing Mia wasn’t enough? Now you’re cursing your own blood?”
I let out a bitter, twisted smile. “You dare bring up the baby? Your selfishness killed him before he ever took a breath. Lucian, you better pray that little ghost doesn’t crawl into your dreams and drag you straight to hell!”
Lucian froze, stunned.
He let go of Liliana and walked toward me.
He mumbled, “No. That’s bullsh*t. An eight-month-old baby is stable—they can’t just die that easily. ”
I smiled coldly and pulled back the blanket, revealing my sunken stomach.
When they pulled him out of me, there was nothing. No cry. No life. Just a tiny, still body.
Just as Lucian’s trembling hand reached to touch my stomach, Liliana shrieked.
“Baby, don’t listen! I caught her! Weeks ago! She was with her lover. That’s how she lost the kid. F*cking some other guy!”
She kept going. “Think about it! Why is Mia dead? She knew! Serafina had her killed to shut her up!”
Liliana’s words exploded in Lucian’s ears.
He stepped back. Face twisting with sick understanding.
He said, “She’s right. Ever since you got knocked up, you wouldn’t let me touch you. It was him. That b*stard.”
I looked at his twisted face and found it utterly ridiculous.
“Today was the Don’s weapons deal at the docks. I lost the baby covering him. Where the f*ck were you? Your job was to protect him! If you hadn’t chased that whining b*tch across town, our son would be alive!” Tears streamed down my face as I shouted desperately.
But Lucian didn’t believe a word. He pulled a switchblade from his belt and pressed it to my throat.
“You lying wh*re!” The switchblade snapped open. “Tell me who it is! Tell me, or I’ll gut you right here! Then I’ll sell what’s left to the nastiest brothel in the slums. You’ll beg for death!”
The cold edge pressed against my skin, carving a thin line of blood.
Even the hot blood couldn’t thaw the ice inside me.
“The Don? Don’t make me laugh. He’s your lover! Tell me where he’s hiding, or I’m selling you to the lowest wh*rehouse in the district. See how long you stay tough there. And that lover of yours? I’ll find him. I’ll take him apart, piece by piece.” The cold, sharp blade stayed at my throat.
Suddenly, heavy, powerful footsteps approached.
“Lucian. I’m the ‘lover’ you’re looking for. You planning on killing me?”
