The room felt ten degrees colder.

Julian forced a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

“Alistair, the cat nearly went for Serena and the baby just now.”

“She’s not thinking straight. She keeps saying there’s another baby in the cart.”

Alistair didn’t waste a breath on him.

He crouched and laid a hand on my head, split and bleeding where the ropes had cut in.

I clamped my teeth on his cuff and jerked my head toward the cart.

[Alistair! The cart! There’s a compartment in the base. Search it!]

[She can’t breathe!]

He couldn’t understand a word I was saying. But he understood me.

He stood. His eyes snapped to the cart.

“Search it.”

One word.

Four of his men swept into the room.

Martha collapsed to the floor, shaking.

They dismantled the cart layer by layer, dumping everything onto the floor.

Bloodied gauze. Used syringes. Empty vials. Nothing else.

No baby.

They pulled every drawer. Checked every shelf.

“Sir. Nothing.”

The guard stepped back.

Alistair’s expression darkened.

His eyes moved from the wreckage on the floor to me, still fighting what was left of the net.

The compartment had been built to disappear. If I hadn’t watched Martha shove the baby in with my own eyes, no one would have known it existed.

Julian straightened up, wounded pride creeping into his voice.

“Satisfied, Alistair?”

“I may have married into this family, but I didn’t check my pride at the door.”

“You don’t get to humiliate me because a cat lost its mind!”

Chloe jumped in right on cue, dabbing at her eyes.

“Alistair, anyone can see how much Julian loves Serena.”

“Making a scene like this doesn’t just hurt Julian. If this gets out, the family name takes the hit.”

Alistair said nothing.

He looked at Serena, barely upright, ashen and shaking, and something in his expression cracked.

“Serena… maybe you really are just exhausted.”

He sighed and pulled her close.

“Marmalade’s getting older. Maybe something’s not right.”

“I’ll send him to the best vet in the city. Have them run every test.”

“Get back in bed. You need to heal.”

The fight drained out of Serena. She let Julian guide her back to the bed.

“I’m sorry… Julian…”

“I think… I think something might really be wrong with me…”

Julian tucked the blanket around her.

“It’s okay, babe. Sleep. You’ll feel better when you wake up.”

The imposter made a soft little coo in the nanny’s arms, smug even at that size.

[Hahaha! These people are all idiots!]

[This whole empire, every last cent of it, is going to be mine!]

Inside the compartment, the real baby’s voice had thinned to a thread.

[Kitty… is Baby going to sleep with the angels…]

[It’s so dark… Baby’s so tired…]

[Mommy… bye-bye…]

No. Not happening. I didn’t spend over a decade protecting this girl just to watch two parasites strip her family bare.

And I was not going to let her baby die in a metal box before she ever opened her eyes.

[MOVE!]

My vision went red. I screamed.

Every muscle in my body coiled, then fired at once.

With a sharp tear, I tore through the net like it was tissue paper.

Everyone in the room watched, frozen.

I launched myself at the cart and drove every ounce of myself into the steel plate at its base.

It cracked.

Bone snapped, and steel buckled.

The cart toppled and crashed to the floor.

The compartment split wide open.

And there she was.

A baby. Blue and completely limp. Eyes shut tight.

She tumbled out and landed at the foot of Serena’s bed.
