I had just finished my follow-up appointment when the hospital room door opened.

Mia Sterling walked in like she owned the place. She pushed a bouquet into my arms.

“How did it go? Can you finally leave today?”

After leaving police custody, I had only wanted to get away as quickly as possible.

I hadn’t even had time to properly treat my injuries.

By the time my flight landed in Los Angeles, I could barely stay conscious.

Fortunately, my best friend Mia had arrived immediately. She took me straight to the hospital.

My supervisor had also learned about my injuries and arranged a delayed start date for my new

position.

He told me not to rush.

I could recover first.

The flowers smelled fresh.

I nodded. “Yeah. The doctor says I’m healing well. I can leave today.”

Mia hugged me. “Finally! I already found you an apartment. I’ll help you get everything settled.”

Outside the hospital, a tall man stood beside a car. His features were sharp and deep-set.

It was Mia’s twin brother. Ethan Sterling.

I had never been close to him.

We had only met a few times when we were young. After high school, the Sterling family moved

their business operations overseas.

Mia and I still met occasionally as adults.

But I hadn’t seen Ethan in years.

Mia put my bags into the car.

“Come on. Ethan can help carry everything. Use him as much as you want today.”

I smiled awkwardly at Ethan. “Thank you.”

He paused. “It’s no trouble. You don’t have to be so polite.”

After getting into the car, I glanced at the rearview mirror.

A familiar figure suddenly appeared in the distance.

My heart jolted.

I turned around.

The street was empty.

Mia followed my gaze.

“What are you looking at?”

I shook my head. “Nothing. I thought I saw someone.”

When we reached the apartment, Mia directed Ethan as he carried my things upstairs.

I hadn’t brought much with me.

Mia had bought most of my clothes and daily necessities.

It had taken several days of her time.

I tried to help.

She immediately hooked her arm through mine.

“You just got out of the hospital. Sit down. You don’t need to do anything”

Ethan turned toward me.

“She’s right. Just rest. I can handle this.”

Warmth spread through me.

Three hours later, the apartment finally looked like a home.

Outside, the sky had already darkened.

“Perfect. I’ll take you both out for dinner.”

Mia looked at me.

I added: “To celebrate my discharge. Don’t say no.”

They finally agreed.

We chose a nearby Italian restaurant.

I had spent so long eating bland hospital food that the first bite tasted unusually good.

Ethan kept making sure I had enough food and water.

He even pushed the dishes toward me whenever I needed something.

Halfway through dinner, I made an excuse to go pay. But the server stopped me.

“Congratulations. You’re our one-hundredth customer today. Your meal is on us.”

I suddenly remembered the familiar figure I’d seen earlier.

Something felt strange. I still handed over my card.

“Thank you. But I’ll pay.”

The server hesitated. Then glanced toward a private room behind him.

“Sorry. Give me a moment. I’ll ask the owner.”

I followed him. But just as I reached the door, he stepped in front of me and closed it.

I caught only a glimpse of a man in a black suit disappearing inside.

The server smiled.

“I’ve already spoken to the owner. The complimentary meal is still available whenever you’d like to

use it.”

I nodded. Paid the bill. Then returned to the table.

Mia was already leaning against her chair.

She had terrible alcohol tolerance. One drink was enough to get her drunk.

But she insisted on having one tonight to celebrate.

Ethan and I helped her into the back seat.

“You take the passenger seat. I’ll drop you home first, then I’ll go back.”

The restaurant was close to my apartment.

I declined Ethan’s offer to drive me.

I wanted to walk.

The stars were bright overhead.

The night breeze moved through my hair.

Leaves rustled along the sidewalk.

For the first time in a long time, I felt completely at ease.

When I reached my apartment building, I stopped.

My voice was calm and cold.

“Alexander.”

“How long are you planning to follow me?”
