Then they took my hands and led me straight into the lights.

My father smiled at the crowd.

“Thank you all for coming to my daughter’s eighteenth birthday. Tonight, I want to announce something officially. I’m transferring another ten percent of my personal shares in Sterling Group to Seraphina as her birthday gift.”

A wave went through the room.

He kept going, voice steady. Proud.

“I want my daughter to know this. The Sterling family will always be there for her. She can do whatever she wants. Be whoever she wants.”

He looked at me then.

Soft. Certain.

“Baby, you are free. Your mother and I will always stand behind you.”

The whole ballroom erupted.

People were actually gasping now.

“She already had five percent at birth, didn’t she? With another ten? At her age? She might be one of the youngest female billionaires in the world.”

“So those rumors were fake after all. People kept saying the Sterlings didn’t care about their daughter.”

“Fake, obviously. They were protecting her.”

I curled my lips a little and let the thought drift toward Evelina like perfume.

Yeah. The whole family had been acting. Just to keep me safe. And Monique guessed one thing right too. Killian had been acting. If anything, he liked me even more than she realized.

Down below, Monique’s face twisted so hard it almost looked painful.

Evelina was worse.

She looked like she wanted to claw my eyes out.

Then Monique slapped her and started dragging her toward the exit.

“Stop making a scene! If we don’t leave now, we’re all blacklisted!”

Served her right; honestly.

As they passed the side entrance, Killian was just coming in with the cake cart.

“Happy birthday, Sera. I made the topper myself.”

I looked down.

A tiny little family of four stood on top of the cake.

Cute enough to make my chest pinch.

He picked up the cake knife with the pink ribbon tied around the handle and placed it carefully in my hand.

“Means our family stays happy forever.”

My eyes stung a little.

I tipped my face up at him.

“Then cut it with me, okay?”

He nodded immediately.

His hand closed over mine.

Warm. Steady.

Suddenly, cheerful music filled the ballroom. Streamers and confetti burst into the air.

Guests looked up at the beautiful scene, murmuring among themselves.

“They really do have such a close bond. Isn’t he the adopted son-his father was a close friend of old Mr. Sterling’s? No blood relation at all?”

“That’s right. And don’t they make a perfect couple? They say he’s already running the company. Became CEO while he was still young. His future is limitless.”

I was a little surprised by the direction of their gossip.

But before I could dwell on it, Killian’s voice came from behind me, light and amused.

“You ready, Sera? It’s time.”

Strange. Maybe it was just my imagination, but he sounded like he was in a good mood.

Didn’t he just storm out of the room?

Whatever. I shook it off.

Then Evelina finally snapped.

She tore herself out of Monique’s grip and screamed at me across the ballroom.

“Don’t get too comfortable, Seraphina Sterling. One day I’m gonna leave you in the dust. I’ll crush you under

my feet and-”

She didn’t get to finish.

Monique slapped her right across the mouth. Hard.

“Shut up! What the hell is wrong with you? We’re leaving. Now.”

She hauled Evelina out by force.

Watching them go, I couldn’t help but feel a little… something.

Not pity, though.

More like: huh. This time, she might not get off any easier than I did in my last life.

Back then, I played nice. Tiptoed around Monique. Tried so hard not to displease her.

And still? She threw me to the wolves.
