I almost denied it. But I saw the look in his eyes and changed my mind.

I nodded.

“You’re right. I’m not. How did you know?”

Kael said, “Elara was kind. If she’d known my mother was in danger, she would have saved her, no matter how badly we’d hurt her.”

I scoffed.

“That’s not kindness. That’s stupidity. She couldn’t even save herself. She wanted to save everyone.

Pathetic.”

Kael’s eyes darkened.

“Where is she? Where is my Elara?”

This was what I’d been waiting for.

I smiled cruelly.

“Your Elara is dead. She was killed by you and Lila.”

I stared hard at his Regret Meter.

Just as I expected, the number jumped when he heard his love was dead.

96%.97%.98%.99%.

It was about to hit 100%. Then it crashed. Hard.

It plummeted all the way back to 50%.

The System shrieked in panic.

[System]: What’s happening?!

It vanished for a few minutes. When it returned, it screamed even louder.

[System]: Host, we’re doomed! The ML has awakened! He’s gone dark!

Before the System finished, Kael took two steps toward me.

He pointed at the floating Regret Meter above his head.

“You approached me just to fill this, didn’t you? But you don’t know I can control it.”

As if to prove it, he forced the meter from 50% down to 0%.

Then he dragged it back up: 10%, 20%, 30%.

He flipped it up and down like a roller coaster.

Finally, he locked it at 0%.

Kael looked at my face, calm and cold.

“I’ve known for a long time this world is just a book.”

“Dozens of others came before you, all trying to make me regret. Every time, I let them reach 99%, then I pull it back down.”

“I love controlling them. When you die, everything resets.’

He grew bored.

He pulled a knife from nowhere and tossed it at my feet.

“Your methods are different from the others. Too bad I hold all the power.”

“If I don’t regret, you fail. Now kill yourself. It’s time to restart the loop.”

Kael looked down at me like I was trash.

I stared back, then picked up the knife.

I lifted it to my neck. Then I stopped.

“Kael, what if I don’t kill myself? What if I stay alive in this world until you die? Your loved ones will never come back.”

Kael’s face turned cold, as if I’d seen right through him.

“Do it yourself, or I’ll do it for you. You don’t want to know what I’ll do.”

He looked murderous, like he would kill me at any second.

I flipped the knife and threw it at his feet.

I told him, “You lost.”
