Pregnant I Took a Bar Job and Heard My Husband Say He Gave Me 400000 Monthly Chapter 01

When I was nearly three months pregnant, I took a part-time job working the night shift at a bar.

On my very first night, I heard my husband’s voice outside one of the VIP rooms.

Blake Harrison was leaning back on the sofa, lighting a cigarette.

“I give my wife four hundred thousand dollars a month. Is that really too little?”

His friend, Jack Miller, almost got to his feet.

“Four hundred grand still isn’t enough? What on earth is she spending it all on? She’s not spending it on someone else behind your back, is she?”

The room fell silent.

Blake’s expression darkened.

“She said she was short on cash last night, so I had another hundred and fifty thousand transferred to her. Then this morning, she still asked for a divorce. She said if I couldn’t afford to support her, I shouldn’t keep her around.”

I stood outside the door, my hands trembling with rage.

I looked down at the slight curve of my stomach.

I couldn’t stand there another second, so I pushed the door open and walked straight in.

Before Blake could react, I struck him across the face.

“So tell me, how many wives have you got?”

His eyes reddened as he clenched his jaw.

“There’s only ever been one. You.”

…

I froze.

“Then why do I only get a hundred and twenty dollars a month?”

Just over a month earlier, when I realised my period was late, I had no choice but to buy the cheapest pregnancy test at the pharmacy.

When two lines appeared, my vision blurred for a moment.

I immediately took a picture and sent it to my best friend, Kelly Davis.

“What am I supposed to do, Kelly? Of all times, I had to get pregnant now.”

She replied almost instantly.

“What a bastard. He won’t even give you enough to live on, but somehow he’s managed to get you pregnant.”

After cursing Blake, she had a go at me too.

“Didn’t you have protection? Why didn’t you use it?”

Even through the screen, I could feel her disapproval.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want to use it.

I had run out, and I couldn’t afford to buy more.

The hundred and twenty dollars I got each month barely covered food.

I couldn’t afford to spend it on anything else.

Blake had always wanted a child.

When he realised I’d stopped buying contraception, he was actually pleased.

I never thought once would be enough.

The hunger in my stomach pulled me back to reality.

With the thirty dollars Kelly had lent me, I went downstairs and bought a bag of bread from the reduced shelf and a carton of milk.

Both were half price that day, making them the cheapest food I could find.

I leaned against the kitchen counter, taking bites of bread and washing them down with milk, and suddenly the absurdity of it all felt unbearable.

On paper, I was the wife of the head of a major investment group, living in an expensive penthouse in the city centre.

In reality, I couldn’t even afford a proper dinner.

After the last bite of bread, I finally called Blake.

As expected, his executive assistant, Jessica Stone, answered.

Blake had put her in charge of my day-to-day expenses.

“Miss Carter, unless I’m mistaken, you’ve already had this month’s allowance.”

I tried to keep my voice steady.

“I’m pregnant. Could I have a bit more this month?”

There was a brief pause on the other end, followed by a quiet laugh.

“Last time, it was low blood sugar, and I already made an exception and gave you an extra fifteen dollars. Now it’s pregnancy, is it? Mr Harrison’s assets still need to be managed properly, so do try to rein in your spending.”

Before I could explain, she hung up.

Before we married, Blake was the one who asked me to give up my job.

He said he would take care of me and let me live the life I wanted without having to worry.

But a hundred and twenty dollars a month simply wasn’t enough.

I once took a part-time job at a café to earn a bit towards my day-to-day expenses.

When Blake found out, he bought the café outright.

“Do I look like I can’t afford to support my own wife? You shouldn’t have to work behind a counter.”

He certainly wasn’t short of money, yet he still didn’t give me another cent.

Kelly asked me, “Are you going to keep the baby?”

I had no answer.

Maybe if Blake knew, he would at least make sure I had enough to eat for the baby’s sake.

I booked an appointment at a clinic.

The doctor told me I was a little over two months along and that the baby was developing normally.
