He froze. Nothing came out.

“When you shoved me at Harper like a prop. Was there one second you saw me as a human being?”

He dropped his head. His hands clawed at his hair.

I kept going. Every word nailed those eighteen years of devotion to a cross.

“You want to know the real sick joke?”

He looked up. His eyes were red and swollen.

“I was stupid enough to be in love with you. From middle school to senior year.”

“I stayed up all night writing every single English paper so you could stay eligible for D1. I got you through AP Math.”

“You said you liked girls who were easy to get along with. So I became a shadow. I didn’t even go to prom. I just wanted to hand you a Gatorade after your games.”

“And you? What was I to you?”

I forced the corner of my mouth up. The scar tissue screamed.

“A free servant? A background extra with no feelings? Someone you could use up and throw away?”

Connor’s tears broke. He reached for my hand. “No. Maya. I care about you. I was just so stupid…”

“We said we’d go to college in the same state. My mom already talked about where our future house would be…”

I let out a laugh. Dry. Brittle. Almost inhuman.

“Care?”

“Your version of caring got seventeen of my bones shattered?”

“Then your care is terrifying.”

He opened his mouth. More excuses. I hit the nurse call button.

“Get out.” I closed my eyes. “Don’t ever let me see you again.”

“Maya. Please…”

“Get out!” The scream ripped my raw throat.

The nurse rushed in. She forced him out.

As the door swung shut, he shouted over his shoulder.

“I’ll wait for you, Maya! I’ll spend my whole life making this up to you!”

I stared at the ceiling.

That stupid girl named Maya. She died in that dark basement.
